Armfield' l.l., oil on canvas 41 x 61cm (2) Condition Report: Overall: 54 x 75cm The painting of four terriers has been relined. Surface dirt with rubbing to the edges. The finish is uneven in places and there are some small patches of retouching evident to the background above and around the dog on the right side.The painting of three terriers has a 3cm tear with some paint loss to the centre of the left edge. Craquelure and surface dirt. Some light surface abrasions and further small losses to the edges. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

        ARTIST: Edward George Armfield (British, 1817 - 1896) NAME: Three Dogs over Pot MEDIUM: oil on canvas CONDITION: Few minor paint losses mostly along edges. Some craquelure. Few small scattered inpaintings 2" x 2" biggest. SIGHT SIZE: 28 x 36 inches / 71 x 91 cm FRAME SIZE: 34 x 42 inches / 86 x 106 cm SIGNATURE: lower right SKU#: 119922 US Shipping $149 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: British genre artist specializing in oil paintings of domesticated dogs. Armfeld professed a great love of animals, and his commissions of hounds and horses were in high demand in his lifetime. Preferring to paint hunting dogs over any other popular subject matter, Armfeld's broad, lively brush strokes captured the earthy colors of fur and grasses. The precocious artist began his career at the young age of 16 when he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy: It was of Lion, a beloved Newfoundland dog. Today, Armfield's work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Glasgow Art Gallery in Glasgow, among many others.

There is a small patch verso corresponding to a small repaired tear to the nearer dog's fur. A further patch to the edge. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please cntact the department.
