Both featuring Lady golfers ‘...then to crown it all she trumped my ace’ and ‘this will be your 129th stroke’, both paintings are signed lower right, framed and glazed. 8 x 6½ inches Joshua Charles Armitage aka Ionicus 1913-1998. Born in Hoylake 1913, his artistic talents were encouraged from an early age when his art master put forward his name for a Cheshire Country Junior Art scholarship. He began at the Liverpool City School of Art in 1929. His first cartoon was published in Punch magazine in 1944. For some reason the cartoon’s background included part of an Ionic column. When asked what his ‘trade name’ was, he replied Ionicus and signed the cartoon and all subsequent works ‘Ionicus’. After the war he quickly established himself as a regular Punch contributor, as well as a book illustrator, artist and cartoonist.
