      • George Denholm Armour - Landscape, near Tetuan, Morocco, 1891 Landscape with camels near Tetuan, Morocco, 1891 and Figure studies
        Feb. 27, 2024

George Denholm Armour - Landscape, near Tetuan, Morocco, 1891 Landscape with camels near Tetuan, Morocco, 1891 and Figure studies

        Est: £200 - £300

George Denholm Armour,  Scottish 1864-1949 Landscape, near Tetuan, Morocco, 1891; Landscape with camels near Tetuan, Morocco, 1891; and Figure studies;  black and white chalk on buff paper, 22.5 x 14.5 cm. and smaller, five (5).  Provenance:  with Abbott & Holder, Ltd., London.  Note:  Armour worked principally as an illustrator over the course of his career, producing illustrations for 'The Graphic', 'Punch', and 'Country Life'. Armour's two Moroccan landscapes and one figure study were part of a sketchbook signed by the artist and dated 1891, and likely originate from the years that the artist lived in Tangiers, Morocco, where, as a keen horseman, he bought and painted horses. The present sketches mark a departure from Armour's typical equestrian subjects. The loose, sparing linework, which imparts a sense of immediacy to the sketches, showcases the artist's confidence and skill as an illustrator.
