ST. MICHAEL AND THE SERPENT OR SATAN DISMAYED measurements note 94cm., 37in. stamped: EXECUTED IN BRONZE BY J.A. HATFIELD./ FOR THE ART UNION OF LONDON./ FROM THE ORIGINAL BY H.H. ARMSTEAD 1853 bronze, weatherd green patina NOTE This group was inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost (1667) and depicts the transformation scene in Book X when the fallen angels are transformed into snakes: 'So having said, a while he stood, expecting / Their universal shout and high applause / To fill his eare, when contrary he hears / On all sides, from innumerable tongues / A dismal universal hiss, the sound / Of public scorn'. St. Michael and the Serpent was one of Armstead's early works and is inspired by Cellini's Perseus and Medusa in the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence. It won him first prize at the sculpture competition organised by the Art Union in 1851. Hatfields cast the group in an edition of twelve which were given as prizes by the Art Union to subscribers on a lottery basis. Five were produced in 1852, five in 1853 and two in 1854, each said to be worth £50. Armstead's preoccupation with subjects from Milton is evident from his first submission to the Royal Academy later that year, Satan beguiling Eve (no.1283) and later in 1856 with Adam and Eve conscious of their Fall (no.1264). The figure of St.Michael is stylistically analagous to the winged figure from his 1863 engraving for A Dream by the late 16th century poet Humphrey Gifford (see Wilmott, p.52). Armstead's naturalistic figures to some extent foreshadowed the New Sculpture Movement. His major accomplishments as a sculptor include the reliefs on the podium of the Albert Memorial and the architectural sculpture allegorical of the continents for the Foreign and Colonial Office.
