          FRANK C. ARMSTRONG

          Est: $600 - $800

(1835-1909) Confederate brigadier general who started the war fighting for the Union at First Bull Run and Wilson's Creek, but later turned traitor and joined the Confederate Army. He is known as the only Confederate general to fight on both sides. Extremely rare war date A.L.S. 'F. C. Armstrong' as a Union lieutenant one week before he changed sides, 1p. 4to., Arlington, July 30, 1861, to Union adjutant general Lorenzo Thomas (1804-1875) requesting a command reassignment. In full: 'I respectfully request to be relieved from duty with 'K' Co. 2nd Dragoons and be allowed to join my own Co. ('F' 2nd Drgs.) now at Fort Laramie or en route to Leavenworth without any dragoon officer. There are several dragoon officers in and around Washington that could relieve me here. My Co. has been under the command of an infantry officer for about two months...'. Tiny stain at left margin affecting nothing, else fine. Armstrong would resign his commission on August 10, 1861 to join the Confederacy and would serve with several prominent generals including Sterling Price, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and Leonidas Polk.

          Est: $300 - $400

FRANK A. ARMSTRONG JR. (1902 - 1969) U.S. Army Air Forces brigadier general during World War II, who personally led the first USAAF strategic bombing attack from England, the last USAAF strategic raid on Japan, and the first attack by the USAAF against a target in Germany. His experiences with the 97th and 306th Bomb Groups was the inspiration for the novel and later film, 'Twelve O'Clock High'. Excellent and rare S.P., 10.75 x 13.75 in b/w, an official U.S. Army Air Forces portrait of Armstrong in uniform, signed at lower-right with rank. The verso bears an ink stamp by the USAAF Base Photographic Section of Ardmore Army Air Field. Numerous creases towards the edges, very tiny spot of image loss at lower-left, else very good.
