With signature. Inscribed below; "John Knox / From the Portrait in Verheiden, Effigies 1602". Breastpiece of John Knox (b. c. 1514 in Gifford Gate-1572 Edinburgh), Scottish reformer and co-founder of the Presbyterian churches. In his native Scotland he is a key figure of the Reformation . John Knox is immortalised as a massive stone figure on the International Reformation Monument in Geneva. Geneva and Edinburgh are two stations in the life of the pugnacious and indomitable theologian, who made a name for himself as an important pioneer of the Reformation in Scotland. In 1560, he was instrumental in writing the so-called "Confessio Scotia". Its adoption by Parliament is regarded as the founding hour of the Church of Scotland.
