"The lesbians who were marrying each other agreed to being photographed on their wedding day, but insisted that I photograph the whipping of the man who was part of the celebration. They said he had insulted one of their number by falling in love with her and asking her to marry him. He had to be punished. He would come to the wedding for his whipping and bring his own whips in his flute case (he was a flautist with one of the great orchestras). At the time of recording at Columbia Record’s studios in November 1952, Dietrich was working on a comeback. It was a cold and rainy night and work could not begin until midnight, on the advice of her astrologer who joined her. She was the first star Eve Arnold extensively photographed ‘in action’. The photographer accompanied all phases of the production until 6 o’clock in the morning. Although Dietrich demanded retouching, Arnold refused. This photograph was published (among others of the series) in the magazine Esquire, establishing her success with candid, ‘unretouched’ celebrity portraits. Zur Zeit der Aufnahmen in den Studios von Columbia Record im November 1952 arbeitete Dietrich an einem Comeback. Es war eine kalte und verregnete Nacht, in der man erst um Mitternach beginnen konnte, auf Rat ihres Astrologen, den sie auch ins Studio mitbrachte. Sie war der erste Star, den Eve Arnold in einer längeren Session bei der Arbeit fotografierte. Bis 6 Uhr morgens begleitete die Fotografin alle Phasen der Produktion. She accompanied the singer during recordings, rehearsals and breaks and was deeply impressed by Dietrich’s professionalism, which is also clear from her pictures. This was a new angle at a time when female stars were usually staged as admirable but unattainable, passive creatures in the studio. When Arnold presented Marlene Dietrich with the proofs, she pulled out her eyebrow pencil and marked what she wanted retouched. Arnold, however, only left out a few unflattering shots and submitted her prints without corrections; they were published worldwide, eventually appreciated by Dietrich as well, and laid the foundation for a successful career that Arnold pursued into old age. Ihren ersten professionellen Auftrag, eine Reportage über Marlene Dietrich bei Tonaufnahmen für Columbia Records, erhielt die 40-jährige Arnold 1952 durch Magnum. Sie begleitete die Sängerin bei allen Aufzeichnungen, Proben und Pausen und war tief beeindruckt von deren Professionalität, was auch auf ihren Bildern deutlich wird. Dies war ein neuer Blickwinkel in einer Zeit, in der weibliche Stars meist als bewundernswerte, aber unerreichbare, passive Geschöpfe im Studio inszeniert wurden. Als Arnold Marlene Dietrich die Probeabzüge vorlegte, zückte sie ihren Augenbrauenstift und markierte, was sie retuschiert haben wollte. Arnold jedoch ließ lediglich einige unschmeichelhafte Aufnahmen weg und reichte ihre Abzüge ohne Korrekturen ein; sie wurden weltweit veröffentlicht, schließlich auch von Dietrich geschätzt und legten den Grundstein für eine erfolgreiche Karriere, die Arnold bis ins hohe Alter verfolgte.
