JOHN JAMES TRUMBULL ARNOLD (PENNSYLVANIA, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, 1812-1865) FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF MARY C. BARNES (SOMERSET CO., PENNSYLVANIA, B.1844)

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

JOHN JAMES TRUMBULL ARNOLD (PENNSYLVANIA, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, 1812-1865) FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF MARY C. BARNES (SOMERSET CO., PENNSYLVANIA, B.1844), oil on canvas, a fine example of the artist's work, the three-quarter length depiction of a dark-haired sitter wearing white gown, gold and woven-hair mourning bracelet, and brightly colored sash bearing a pattern that resembles a traditional Mexican serape, while holding a characteristic Arnold-type rose in her right hand and resting her elbow upon a marble-like plinth, signed, dated, and inscribed in the artist's hand "A Portrait of / Mary C. Barnes, drawn / when she was twelve years / of age / By John Arnold / In April 1856" verso. Unframed. Reserve. Dated 1856. 36" x 24 1/4". Catalogue Note: The present portrait has descended in the family of the sitter, Mary C. Barnes. Born in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania in 1844, Mary was the oldest daughter of Hamilton Boswell "H. B." Barnes (1821-1901) and Harriet Barnes. Hamilton is recorded throughout the second half of the 19th century as a resident of Middlecreek Township in Somerset County. In 1850, Hamilton's profession is listed as "Tailor" in the "Apparel and Accessories Stores / Except Shoes" industry, which may account for the unusual sash his daughter displays so proudly in her portrait. This fine portrait is one of a known group of works signed by, or attributed to, John James Trumball Arnold (1812-1865), an itinerant artist who worked in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia (including what is now West Virginia). Examples of Arnold's work reside in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg as well as a number of private collections. The present example is a classic work by Arnold employing minimal decoration to the background while including carefully selected objects within the composition in an effort to emphasize certain features of the subject, notably the face and hands. The arrangement is highly effective, conveying an immediate sense of the sitter's delicate beauty, at just a glance.
