oil on board 49.5 x 61 cm signed lower right: JGallegos In an important period frame. In 1880 the Spanish painter decided to settle in Rome, moved by the evident successes that his Iberian peers were ringing in the peninsula, in the wake of Marià Fortuny y Marsal who had just disappeared in the capital in 1874. Italy, also for José Gallegos, became a favorite land, so much so that in 1887 he married the Milanese Giuseppina Trelanzi, who gave him four children, then died prematurely in 1897. In these years, Gallegos gave life to his most characteristic production, lit by references to neo-seventeenth-century Spanish painting , much loved by collectors in Europe and beyond the ocean, with a taste for an involved narration, and chromatically and in customs and traditions. -goyesca - were the painter's favorite themes, but this Flamenco! represents a work-manifesto and which we present here for the first time ever to the public. So much was firm the link c on Italy which, despite the numerous laurels at the international exhibitions of the time (Berlin, Munich, Paris, London) and the subsequent marriage to the English Constance Harding, decided to buy a villa in Nettuno, where she regularly stayed every summer; on one of these occasions, falling from a tree he was seriously injured, dying not long after and being buried right in the coastal city.

JOSÉ GALLEGOS Y ARNOSA (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Anzio, Italy, 1917). "Procession in Venice in front of the Basilica of San Marco. Oil on panel. Signed and located (Venice) in the lower left corner. Size: 19 x 9.5 cm; 26 x 20 cm (frame). Painter and sculptor, José Gallegos felt attraction for painting since he was a child, standing out together with Salvador Sánchez Barbudo, of the same age, in the pictorial arts. Together they frequently visited the studio of Luís Sevíl, a Romantic painter of the first generation of Jerez painters, and attended the artistic and literary gatherings organised by the Ysasi sisters. The painter began his training in classes at the Casino de Artesanos de Jerez, where he received advice from Guillermo Cook, who would later become director of the Jerez Academy of Fine Arts. Cook advised José Gallegos's parents to find the means for their son to study fine arts, and finally the young man went to Madrid in 1873, at the age of sixteen. There he studied at the San Fernando School in Madrid, where his main teachers were the Madrazo family. After the successes he achieved in several exhibitions, reflected by the art critics of the time, José Gallegos went to Tunisia and Morocco, attracted by the light and the suggestive atmosphere of these exotic lands. In 1878 he travelled to Rome to further his training, and two years later he decided to settle permanently in the Italian capital, where he became a member of the Spanish School. From Rome he travelled to Madrid, Seville, Jerez, Munich, London, Paris and Berlin, holding individual exhibitions and taking part in group exhibitions. In 1891 he was awarded the gold medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Berlin. The works of José Gallegos can be found in leading art galleries, private collections and art galleries all over the world, including the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the Mathaf Gallery in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Cadiz.

JOSÉ GALLEGOS ARNOSA Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz 1857 - Anzio, Italy 1917 The signing of the wedding contract. 1899 Oil on panel Signed and dated size 40 x 30 cm José Gallegos y Arnosa was one of the Spanish painters who best interpreted the pictorial genre of tableautin, in Spain called “casacón or casacones painting”. These small paintings, with a precious and meticulous technique, set in the 18th century, became fashionable in the second half of the 19th century. Its inventor, the painter Jean-Louis-Ernst Meissonier, found in the dealer Adolphe Goupil his best ally in the dissemination of a new genre that enjoyed great success among the more affluent families. In 1880, the Jerez-born painter Gallegos y Arnosa settled permanently in Rome and from his famous studio on the Via Margutta he dedicated himself to buying and selling antiques, a task that made him compatible with the art of painting. The Signature of the wedding contract uses a refined and exquisite technique to construct a scene of manners with a Goyesque setting of great mastery.

Jose Gallegos Y Arnosa (Spanish 1859-1917) - Feeding the pigeons

      Est: £12,000 - £18,000

Oil on panel Signed and dated 1883 , lower left 60 x 37cm (23 5/8 x 14 1/2in) Provenance: Purchased circa 1930 ; Thence by descent to the present owner José Gallegos spent most of his life in Italy and was a leading figure of the Spanish School in Rome, along with Mariano Fortuny y Carbo (1838-1874), José Villegas y Cordero (1848-1922) and Salvador Sanchez Barbudo (1857-1917). Cathedral interiors, choir scenes and religious festivals were among his favourite subjects, as well as outdoor market scenes. Painted in 1883, Feeding the pigeons is an early work, clearly showing the artist s assimilation of the principles of Impressionism, with a skilled emphasis on colour and light. It is a beautiful day with bright light; flowers are in bloom, pigeons flutter in the yard fed by two young women in traditional costume. Gallegos has perfectly captured every detail of the figures and courtyard where they stand by his superb technique.
