Perez, Focus East - Early photography in the Near East 1839-1885, p.127: "Arnoux, a resident photographer in Port Said, produced the most thorough photographic documentation of the Suez Canal excavation (...). Arnoux followed the digging of the canal throughout the last years and concentrated on, in addition to the sites, the heavy machinery used in the process. (...) Hippolyte Arnoux literally lived on the water, on the spot day after day. He transformed his boat into a darkroom. The boat, which also carried the sign "Photographie du Canal", appears on a number of photographs of the period". Titles include i.a. the following: "Phare et entrée du Port-Saïd"; "Port-Said" (tear in image) (both by Arnoux); "Passage de Prince de Galles a Port-Saïd" and [manuscript on mount:] "Entrance to Canal" (both anonymous) and "Arrivée du Prince de Galles à Port-SaÏd' (Comianos et Sarolidis).
