Arnštam (1881-1969) - Russian painter, graphic artist and illustrator Signed with monogram ‘AA’ in Cyrillic lower right Sheet dimensions: 22 x 36.5 cm Provenance: Estate of the Princess Marie-Louise of Looz-Corswarem (1921-2007); private collection South Germany Condition: The sheet is slightly discolored and shows crease and finger marks. The margins with several blemishes and three larger tears (1-2 cm). The upper left corner has a small loss in the paper. The sheet‘s dimensions are 22 x 36.5 cm. Alexander Arnstam (1880-1969) Alexandr Arnstam studied painting in the studio of Konstantin Juon in Moscow, and then in Paris. From 1908 to 1919, he lived in St. Petersburg, and from 1920 to 1922 in Moscow; beginning in 1922, he stayed abroad (he was based in Berlin until 1940). During his stay in Paris, he created cityscapes and genre scenes. In St. Petersburg, he designed book covers, vignettes, periodicals and publications. After 1917, he worked on logos and bookplates. In 1918, he participated in the decoration of industrial buildings in Petrograd on the occasion of the 1st anniversary of the October Revolution. During his stay in Moscow, he was dedicated to book illustrations. Arnstam’s works show a close connection to the late tradition of ‘Mir iskusstva’, which is reflected in his interest in ornamental book design.
