Ahrend-Hatzer, Blaricum, July 1969.-With Kunsthandel Scherpel, Bussum, July 1978.-Private collection, the Netherlands, 1991.-Auction, Christie's, Amsterdam, 29 April 1998, lot. 367, where acquired by the family of the present owner, With number 'no. 339' (written on the reverse). Please compare this lot to a painting with a view on the Bierkade from the same point, but with a vertical composition of the houses on the right , sold at: Auction, C. de Kuypers, The Hague, 13 February 1912, lot 13. The Bierkade, nowadays also known as ‘Avenue Culinaire’, is situated on one of the most beautiful canals in the centre of The Hague. Nowadays, it is the perfect destination for a variety of restaurants and cafes, each offering a unique and international selection of dishes and drinks. In the past The Hague was officially not considered a city, brewing beer was prohibited. All beer, mainly brought in from Delft, was taken to the Bierkade, which was already fully paved in the seventeenth century. This was the sole location in The Hague where people were allowed to unload or trade beer. This rule was established to ensure that the payment of excise duties could be controlled. Beer brewers were allowed to live on the Bierkade, but innkeepers and others who served alcohol were not. The Dunne Bierkade is the extension of the Bierkade in a southern direction. Here, small beer was traded; this beer contained less alcohol and thus was cheaper, more intended for the common people. The neighbourhood was home to renowned artists: in the 17th century, the painter Jan van Goyen lived there. Jan Steen lived with him for some time and married his daughter. Architect and painter Pieter Post built the house for The Hague's city architect, Claes Dircx van Balckeneynde, on the Bierkade. The painter Paulus Potter also rented a house there. And in the early 20th century, the writer Godfried Bomans was born on the Bierkade. The painter Floris Arntzenius also enjoyed coming to this neighbourhood. He loved the hustle and bustle around Het Zieken, the Brouwersgracht and the Bierkade: the greenery of the trees, the ripples of the water in the canal, the boats along the quay with colourful crates and barrels on the shore. Cityscapes already held an important place in Arntzenius' work during his time in Amsterdam (in the 1880s), but in The Hague – where he moved in 1892 – he fully developed this genre. The quieter atmosphere of The Hague, compared to Amsterdam, encouraged him to paint intimate city scenes on a small scale, focusing mainly on the atmosphere. He made fervent sketches and studies of various streets, and expanded them into paintings of a modest size. On rainy days, he depicted the intimate character of the streets, such as the Spuistraat and the Wagenstraat, with figures hurrying along the wet and shiny asphalt past illuminated shop windows and colourful signs. The rhythm of the city fascinated him: the irregular lines of the building facades, and the vertical movement of windows and facades. To capture the wide range of subjects from daily life in the city, he regularly moved studios or would ‘rent a window’ so that he didn't have to sit directly on the side of the canal or on the street; he didn't like to receive too much attention while he was working. The present lot shows the Bierkade in Arntzenius’ favourite hazy weather conditions. It is a busy day: a horse is standing in front of a carriage, a man is pushing a handcart, labourers on boats are loading and unloading wares, and figures are braving the weather to get where they need to go. Despite the abundance of movement and figures in the painting, it emanates tranquillity. The grey weather and liberal use of browns and blacks that is often present in the artist’s work can even come across as melancholy but gives a monumental feeling to the painting. This feeling is emphasised by the size of the painting: while Arntzenius often worked on a small scale, this painting is an impressive size, at 143x218 cm. The eye is drawn to the girl in a light blue dress in the foreground that advances directly towards us, subtly drawing you into this exquisite composition. May we invite you to step forward and quietly explore The Hague at the turn of the 20th century, as experienced at the time by one of Holland's most renowned city painters.

A cloudy day in the Spuistraat, The Hague, signed 'fl Arntzenius' (lower left), watercolour on paper, 49x34,5 cm, Literature:-Dolf Welling, ‘Floris Arntzenius', The Hague 1992, ill. p. 117.Provenance:-With Kunsthandel Leslie Smith, Wassenaar, 1994, where acquired by the present owner, Only Floris Arntzenius can capture the unique atmosphere of a rainy day in the streets of The Hague. Located at the coast, the ‘Hofstad’ (court city) bathes in a special silver light. This effect already fascinated the generation of painters before Arntzenius. The painters of the ‘Hague School’, also called the ‘Grijze School’, drenched their compositions in grey tones. Yet, whilst his older colleagues like Bernardus Johannes Blommers and Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch painted mainly the life of peasants or fishers in the countryside, Artzenius focused on the activity in the city. The focus on mundane life in this fast changing city makes Arntzenius a ‘modern painter’. In Arntzenius’ compositions we get an idea of the intimate character of these public spaces in The Hague around 1900. Women are shopping and gallivanting in famous streets like the ‘Spuistraat’ or ‘Wagenstraat’, while uptight businessmen are keeping their pace to be on time for their next appointment. This hustle and bustle of modern life is clearly visible in the present lot. It seems that the rain shower has just stopped and people start walking the streets again. The wet and shiny asphalt, delicately executed in watercolour, acts as a mirror reflecting the figures’ every move. The whole spectacle is shed in Arntzenius’ silvery palette, which has been rightly praised as one of the most subtle of his time. This balanced composition can be regarded as an archetype in the artist’s oeuvre, where all elements of Arntzenius’s excellent watercolour skills come together.

      Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Floris Arntzenius (1864-1925), A cloudy day in The Hague, signed 'fl Arntzenius' (lower left), watercolour on paper, 49x34,5 cm, Literature:-Dolf Welling, ‘Floris Arntzenius', The Hague 1992, ill. p. 117.Provenance:-With Kunsthandel Leslie Smith, Wassenaar, 1994, where acquired by the present owner. , Only Floris Arntzenius can capture the unique atmosphere of a rainy day in the streets of The Hague.

Floris Arntzenius (1864-1925), Elegant ladies and children on the beach of Scheveningen, oil on panel, 22,5x34 cm, signed 'Fl. Arntzenius' (scratched, lower right), In 1892, Floris Arntzenius (1864-1925) moved to The Hague and made various paintings and watercolours of numerous streets in The Hague, mostly in gloomy weather conditions. These works were very popular and found many admirers. Besides his well-known rainy street views of The Hague, Arntzenius cultivated other genres. He painted floral still lifes, self-portraits and portraits of members of his household as well as beach scenes, perhaps a lesser-known part of his œuvre. The Scheveningen of Arntzenius is very different from the one of the Hague School painters. In 1894, a storm hit Scheveningen. Boats stranded on the beach, fishermen on donkeys, or net menders in the dunes have given way to elegant ladies and gentlemen resting on rattan beach chairs or under a parasol, chatting or reading the papers with children playing in the sand nearby. Arntzenius' beach scenes have a different feel to those of his Amsterdam contemporary Isaac Israels who depicted his figures directly standing or lying on the sand under a parasol and dressed in bathing suits. The modest size of this painting creates an intimate yet sophisticated character. Arntzenius beautifully captures the light and atmosphere of a sunny day at the beach of Scheveningen and the movement of the waves in the background helps to create a balanced composition.
