        Drawing in black chalk on paper. Signed “W. Arondéus” & titled in lower left corner. Ca. 61,5 x 43 cm. Framed (behind glass). ¶ Beautiful drawing in Arondéus’ characteristic symbolistic style of which the title refers to the controversial French novel “Escal-Vigor” (first published in 1899) by the Belgian author Georges Eekhoud (1854-1927) in which homosexuality openly is described. Arondéus was one of the scarce Dutch pre-war homosexuals who publicly expressed his homosexual preference. – Sl. foxed/ browned, but else in good condition (not examined out of frame).

        DRAWING in black & grey ink (finished with black & grey wash) on paper, signed “W. Arondeus” in pencil in lower part. Ca. 46,5 x 33,5 cm. Mounted onto boards & behind passepartout. Willem Arondeus (1894-1943) ¶ Beautiful drawing in Arondéus’ characteristic symbolistic style meant as design for a book-plate of the Dutch artist Annie Roland Holst-de Meester (1893-1987) and her husband Marius Roland Holst (1889-1960), brother of the Dutch poet Adriaan Roland Holst (1888-1976) with whom Arondéus was good friends. This book-plate (meas. 11,3 x 8,3 cm.) was printed around 1925. – A few small imperfections (small scratch in outer left part, tiny brown waterstain in lower part), but nevertheless in good condition. Design for the ex-libris of Annie and Marius Roland Holst signed 'W. Arondeus.' (lower right) india ink on paper laid down on cardboard, unframed, 46x33 cm Literature: -Johan Schwencke, 'Het ex-libris in Nederland', Amsterdam 1935, p. 30, no. 39 Provenance: -Collection Mr. Marius Roland Holst and Mrs. Anna de Meester. -Auction, Paul Brandt, Amsterdam, 26 March 1962, lot 56, where acquired by the family of the present owners.
