Naoum Aronson Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor

Naum Aronson Lvovich (1872-1943) was born on December 25, 1872, in a traditional religious family of ten children in Kreslavka, a village near Vitebsk in Bearus, then part of the Russian empire, now part of the Republic of Latvia.

Sculpting from an early age as a self-made sculptor, Naum left Home at 16 years old. He enrolled at the art drawing school of Ivan Trutnev in Vilna. He came back home after 10 months because of anti-Semitism expressed by the director of the program. He stayed two years and decided to move to Paris. Naum moved to Paris in 1891 to attend the school of Decorative Arts. In his diaries Naum said “I arrived in Paris without any knowledge of the language..,but with great energy and hopes that I would not die of Hunger”[ii]. He also attended the studio of Professor H. Lemaire and the Colarossi Studio. Aronson had always been acutely aware of people’s facial expressions “I can see the men, my grandfather and father with their clear faces that had shed their everyday masks.” (Glants, p. 11) In 1894, Aronson return to Russia to do his military service. Two years later he was back in Paris and Naum picked up his career where he had left it.

ARONSON Naoum (1873-1943) Portrait de Leon Tolstoï Plâtre Signé « N.Aronson » 55 x 32 x 30 cm. Dans l’état (accidents) Provenance : Collection particulière, France Vente de l’atelier de Jose Pillon, 6/12/2010, Dupont & Associés SVV, Morlaix. L350. NAUM ARONSON  (RUSSIAN 1872-1843) Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy Charcoal on buff paper Signed, N. Aronson' l.r. 40 x 31.5 cm (15 1/2 x 12 2/8 in) Provenance: Private Collection UK. acquired by the present owner's grandfather Aaron Rapoport directly from the artist in Paris, and thence by descent.  Footnote: In August 1901, Aronson was commissioned to do a sculpture of Tolstoy.  He travelled to the village of Yasnay  Polyana, Russia, in order to meet Tolstoy and his family. Aronson said: “I had great hopes and ambitions but would never have aspired to sculpt the gods-for that is what Tolstoy was for me. Even to approach him seemed blasphemous.”[i] Aronson returned to Paris with a clay model and over sixty sketches of Tolstoy.  “It was as he sat in this chair in the semi-darkness, that I used every opportunity to jot down his expressions – of weariness, pensiveness, and sometimes dissatisfaction.” (Glants, p. 21). He refined the sculpture of Tolstoy in 1901-1902, Aronson casted the bust in bronze at the Alexis Rudier Fondeur. The work was exhibited at the Fine Arts Academy in St Petersburg in 1902 to immense acclaim; the critics in agreement said that it truly captured Tolstoy.  “He is no longer with us, but his great spirit and his immortal thought remain.  This is what I wanted to convey – the Mont Blanc of the Russian land…The drawing of Tolstoy sitting in his armchair – that is how I saw him; Plunged in thought as he listened to the music.” (Glants, p. 21)  The present drawing relates closely to the drawing of Tolstoy by Naum Aronson that was sold at Shapiro Auctions: 28th April, 2012, Lot 76. It conveys the distinctive characteristics of the deep set eyes lost in thought but drawn from a different angle that indicates that this was one of the series of over sixty studies he made from life when he visited Tolstoy in 1901. He used these studies to produce the clay model which was then cast in bronze.  Also from the same collection: Naum Aronson 'Salome' , marble sculpture - Lot 53, Chiswick Auctions, Fine European Works of Art, 6th June.  We are grateful to Musya Glants, for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.  Sources:  Glants, M. In 1891 he moved to Paris, which was attracting East European Jewish artists at the time. For two years he simultaneously attended the free municipal Ecole des Arts Decorative, the class of the sculptor Prof. H. Lemarie, and the Privet Art School of F. Colarossi. He was influenced by the work of  Michelangelo and Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and he became acquainted with and deeply inspired by the work of the Impressionists. He lived and worked in Paris for nearly fifty years but due to financial difficulties, he was unable to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited his work at the Salon du champs de Mars and he became a jury member of the salon. His work was also exhibited  at the International Exhibition in 1900. He was awarded a gold medal prize in Liege. In 1937 he was granted France's highest award. the Legion of Honor, for his work at the 'Exposition Universelle.' Aronson reached his maturity in the 1920's, which is when the present marble dates from, and by this time he had exhibited a large body of works with such titles as Enigme, 'Les Épaves and Aux Innocents. They are similarly carved with forms emerging from a marble matrix left rough-hewn. The present work, one of his most emblematic and spiritual, relates to the bronze that was exhibited in 1924. This work may well show the influence of Rodin. He produced a number of versions of Salomé in bronze as well as another carved version in basalt which dated from 1837 and was acquired directly from the artist (see Sotheby's London: Tuesday, November 25, 2014 [Lot 505] Russian Works of Art, Fabergé and Icons). He was celebrated for his portrait busts of important leaders and cultural figures, including Beethoven, Wagner, Chopin, Berlioz, Pasteur, Tolstoy, Rasputin and  Lenin (exhibited in the Soviet Pavillion in 1937). Aronson fled to America after the German invasion of France. He arrived in New York in March, 1941, on the S.S. Serpa Pinto, a Portuguese liner used by multiple Jewish organizations to transport refugees from Lisbon to New York. He died in New York in 1943.
