Jose Arpa (1858-1952) The Balanced Rock, Grand Canyon, 1926 oil on canvas 14 x 17 inches 18.75 x 21.5 inches (frame) signed lower right: Jose Arpa verso: labels, Oakland Art Gallery, Oakland, California, 1926; Harry Halff Fine Art, 2010; Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, 2016 Jose Arpa y Perea, acclaimed as “The Colorist Painter,” infused vibrant hues into his depictions of figures and landscapes, particularly in Texas, where he revitalized San Antonio painting with sunlit local scenes. Hailing from Carmona, Spain, Arpa’s career spanned etching, illustration, and muralism, alongside teaching roles both in Spain and Texas. Trained under Eduardo Cano de la Pena in Seville, he won the Prix de Rome three years running and spent six formative years working in Rome. He exhibited internationally, including at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, showcasing his Impressionistic style. He traveled to San Antonio, in 1899, and exhibited at the San Antonio International Fair in 1900. Afterwards, he divided his time between Mexico, pain, and San Antonio until 1923, when he founded his own painting school in San Antonio. Assisted later by his nephew, the artist Xavier Gonzales, he began teaching classes en plein air in Bandera, Texas, in 1926. Arpa’s influence on “Texas Impressionism” was profound, shaping artistic discourse until his passing in Spain in 1952. The Balanced Rock, painted by the artist in 1926 was exhibited in a traveling one-man show titled Jose Arpa: A Spanish Painter in Texas, created and conducted by the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas, in 2017.

        Est: €12,000 - €14,000

JOSÉ ARPA PEREA (Carmona, 1858 - Seville, 1952). "Flowers". Oil on canvas. Signed and located in the lower right area. Measurements: 61 x 74 cm; 74 x 84 cm (frame). This work, located in Seville, probably belongs to the artist's last period, as aesthetically the treatment of the material on the canvas, the load of oil and the textured finish of the image are very reminiscent of the qualities of his landscapes in the United States. Compositionally the work is really interesting, as the artist recreates a landscape, but lowers the point of view and narrows the space in such a way as to present a classic still life of flowers, which is the main motif, but contextualised in its own surroundings. José Arpa Perea was a Spanish landscape painter who produced much of his work in North America. He moved from Carmona to Seville at the age of ten, where he combined his work as a broad-brush painter with evening classes at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts in Seville from 1876, where he met Eduardo Cano. Between 1883 and 1886 he lived in Rome, in great need owing to the meagre grant he was awarded by the Seville provincial council, where he painted historical canvases. On his return to Seville he set up his own studio and began to be recognised, winning commissions such as the decoration of the Círculo Mercantil and the city's Casino Militar. He further developed his orientalist facet on a trip to Morocco in 1895. He lived in Mexico between 1896 and 1910, later moving to San Antonio (Texas, United States) because of the Mexican Revolution, setting up a painting academy there and receiving commissions, enjoying an economic situation that enabled him to make frequent trips to Spain, with long stays in Seville and visits to the Cantabrian coast. He spent more than 30 years in this American city. Throughout his life he was in frequent contact with the landscape painters of the well-known Alcalá de Guadaira School, and his work could be seen in numerous cities in all the countries in which he lived (Seville...), and is held in important private collections all over the world and in prominent institutions such as the Seville Museum of Fine Arts, the Cajasol Museum, the Museum of Huelva, the San Antonio Museum of Art (United States), the Museo Universitario Casa de los Muñecos (Puebla, Mexico), etc.

        Apr. 23, 2024

JOSÉ ARPA PEREA (Car¬mo¬na, 1858 - Sevilla, 1952). "Landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed and located in Texas in the lower left area.

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

JOSÉ ARPA PEREA (Car¬mo¬na, 1858 - Seville, 1952). "Landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed and located in Texas in the lower left area. Measurements: 27 x 41 cm. In this work of arid landscape, the artist deploys a palette rich in tonalities and color variations, which brings a great richness to the few elements that make up this idyllic landscape. Through touches with the brush he achieves an almost microscopic image of the small vegetation that grows in the scene. This solitary image has the presence of a river whose blue finish stands out over the warmth of the ochers. This work located in Texas speaks of a key facet in the artist's life, who had to leave Mexico due to the revolution, settling in the Texan city of San Antonio, where he created an art school. José Arpa Perea was a Spanish painter specialized in landscapes who developed much of his work in North America. He moved from Carmona to Seville when he was ten years old, where he combined his work as a brush painter with night classes at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville from 1876, where he met Eduardo Cano. Between 1883 and 1886 he was living, with great needs due to the meager scholarship granted by the Diputación de Sevilla, in the city of Rome, painting historical canvases. On his return to Seville, he set up his own studio and began to be recognized, obtaining commissions such as the decoration of the Mercantile Circle and the Military Casino of the city. He deepened his orientalist facet thanks to a trip to Morocco in 1895. He lived in Mexico between 1896 and 1910, leaving later to San Antonio (Texas, United States) because of the Mexican Revolution, setting up a painting academy in this city and receiving commissions, enjoying an economic situation that allowed him to make frequent trips to Spain, with long stays in Seville and visits to the Cantabrian coast. Throughout his life he was in frequent contact with the landscape painters of the well-known Alcalá de Guadaira School. His work could be seen in numerous cities in all the countries where he lived (Seville...), and is preserved in important private collections all over the world and in prominent institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville, the Cajasol Museum, the Museum of Huelva, the San Antonio Museum of Art (United States), the Museo Universitario Casa de los Muñecos (Puebla, Mexico), etc.

JOSE ARPA PEREA (Carmona, 1858 - Seville, 1952). "San Antonio, USA". Oil on canvas. Re-colored. It has slight repainting. Signed and located in the lower left corner. Size: 98 x 82 cm. In this work of arid landscape, the artist deploys a palette rich in shades and color variations, which brings a great richness to the few elements that make up this desert landscape. Through touches with the brush he achieves an almost microscopic image of the small vegetation growing in the center of the scene. This solitary image has the presence of a child whose blue dungarees stand out against the warmth of the ochers. This work, located in San Antonio, speaks of a key facet in the visa of the artist, who had to leave Mexico due to the revolution, settling in the Texan city of San Antonio, where he created an art school. Between 1883 and 1886 he lived in the city of Rome, with great needs due to the meager scholarship granted to him by the Diputación de Sevilla, where he painted historical canvases. On his return to Seville, he set up his own studio and began to be recognized, obtaining commissions such as the decoration of the Mercantile Circle and the Military Casino of the city. He deepened his orientalist facet thanks to a trip to Morocco in 1895.
