        Feb. 06, 2024

Hapag Mediterranean and Orient Cruises Hamburg Amerika Linie Vintage Poster c1935

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

The Hamburg-Amerika Linie [Line] was a transatlantic shipping enterprise established in Hamburg, Germany in 1847 and it operated through 1970. This c1935 poster promotes choosing the Hamburg America Line for a Mediterranean cruise. Local women are depicted here, with their homeland in the background. Before the First World War, the Hamburg-America Line was one of the largest fleets of commercial ships in the world. With so many of its ships damaged in the war years, Hapag (as it is also known) rebuilt its fleet in the '20s and '30s with sturdier, more efficient vessels that would help it re-brand as a company that was reliable and steady to sail with. Otto Arpke (1886-1943) was a German graphic artist and typographer. He is best known for his design for the famous silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

        Hapag. ca. 1933.

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: OTTO ARPKE (1886-1943) SIZE: 30 1/4 x 44 in./76.7 x 101.7 cm PRINTER: O. Elsner KG, Berlin DESCRIPTION: The Hamburg America Line (from its mouthful of a name, Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft, or HAPAG) was a shipping enterprise initiated in 1847. It quickly became Germany's—and at times the world's—largest shipping company, serving primarily the market created by German immigration to the United States. It also offered passenger cruises; this design promotes its Mediterranean circuit, replete with a dense blue sea and fruit-laden locals. One of the fleet's massive vessels floats in the distance, while a cluster of sailboats help provide a sense of scale. (Art Deco; Travel; Ships/Sea; German)
