Work exhibited in Cent Anys Retrat Femení y Catala, 1933. Nº98. Provenance: Counts of Viladarga. Measurements: 60 x 48 cm; 74 x 59 cm (frame). Painter and professor of Fine Arts, Josep Arrau i Barba began his studies under the tutelage of his father, the also painter Josep Arrau i Estrada (1774-1818). A tireless traveler, throughout his life he visited different Spanish cities, such as Madrid, Valencia, Alicante and Malaga, and different European countries, including France, Belgium, England and, especially, Italy. In Milan he met the painter Giusepe Molteni, who introduced him to the atmosphere of "Nazarene" romanticism. In 1834 he moved to Italy for the second time, where he came into contact with the group of young Spanish artists who, recently arrived in Rome, adopted the assumptions of Germanic "Nazarenism", establishing with them a relationship of mutual influence. Some of the museums that conserve his work, in addition to numerous private collections, are the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya-Museu d'Art Modern, the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi or the Reial Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona. Work exhibited in Cent Anys Retrat Femení y Catala, 1933. Nº98. Preserves original canvas and period frame with slight damage caused by xylophages.
