RICARDO ARREDONDO CALMACHE (Cella, 1850-Toledo, 1911) "Landscape". Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 30 x 43 cm (frame); 46 x 59 cm (frame). Ricardo Arrendodo's interest in art began as a child, refusing to follow in his father's footsteps as a military man, at the age of twelve he began his training under the teachings of Matias Moreno. Later he moved to Madrid to begin his studies at the special school of Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving, where one of the teachers who most influenced him was Carlos de Haes. However, this first influence changed after his trip to Paris. After returning to Spain he participated in several National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded the third medal in 1884 and 1895. During this time he also worked with a publishing house. Finally he settled in Toledo where he became a councilman of the city council, taking part in the commission of Monuments, where he was in charge of the intervention and restoration of them. His work is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Museum of Zaragoza, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Toledo and the University of Santiago de Compostela, among other important institutions.

In this work Arredondo offers us a landscape with a wide panoramic view, worked with great depth until reaching a background closed by high and monumental mountains, full of vegetation. In the foreground he depicts a river, on the banks of which stand old abandoned houses. His extensive landscapes of the city of Toledo and the Tagus and its banks earned him the nickname of "The Painter of Toledo". Ricardo Arrendodo's interest in art began as a child, refusing to follow in his father's footsteps as a military man, and at the age of twelve he began his training under the teachings of Matias Moreno. Later he moved to Madrid to begin his studies at the special school of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving, where one of the teachers who most influenced him was Carlos de Haes. However, this first influence changed after his trip to Paris. After returning to Spain he took part in several National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded the third medal in 1884 and 1895. During this time he also worked with a publishing house. He finally settled in Toledo, where he became a councillor on the city council, taking part in the Monuments Commission, where he was in charge of the intervention and restoration of monuments. His work is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Museum of Zaragoza, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toledo and the University of Santiago de Compostela, among other important institutions.

Size: 34.5 x 16 cm; 57.5 x 39.5 cm (frame). In this panel Arredondo skilfully depicts the door of the Hospital de la Misericordia in Toledo, a building that was established as a charitable institution in the first third of the 15th century.
