      Nov. 23, 2024

AARON ARROWSMITH A NEW MAP OF MEXICO AND ADJACENT PROVINCES, 1810

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

ARROWSMITH, Aaron (1750-1823). A New Map of Mexico and Adjacent Provinces... Engraved map in four parts with hand color in outline. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1810. 26" x 33 1/8" sheet, 31" x 37 1/2" framed (each). Comparable: Dorothy Sloan Rare Books, 1999 - $39,100.00; Arader Galleries, 2016 - $36,600. This is the first large-scale map to depict the important discoveries of Pike and Humboldt in the southwest. "Perhaps the most respected mapmaker of the early nineteenth century, Aaron Arrowsmith produced maps which were the result of a careful synthesis of all of the information he could obtain. His map of Mexico which first appeared in 1810 was bitterly criticized by Humboldt as a blatant plagiarism of his own map. While there is no doubt that Arrowsmith did use Humboldt's data to best advantage, his map was no mere copy. For his improved rendering of the Brazos River, if for no other reason, Arrowsmith's depiction of the Texas area merits inclusion as a landmark in the cartography of the region" (Crossroads of Empire - Amon Carter Museum exhibit, June 1981). This map depicts an expansive coverage of the present day southwestern United States, from the Upper and Lower Mississippi River to California, south of the 42nd parallel.

Acclaimed British cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith, drafted accurate, detailed charts that earned him the titles of Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales - extremely important distinctions during an era when Britain ruled the seas. As one of the first great British cartographers of North America, Arrowsmith introduced a new standard of excellence in mapmaking in the late 18th century and almost single handedly made London the center for the cartographic trade. Issued in the same year as the Louisiana Purchase, Arrowsmith's unequaled accuracy was invaluable for navigators and Europeans who held commercial interest in the Gulf of Mexico. This map surpassed its predecessors in precise and flawless detail, as well as its impressive scale. With its vivid outline color and crisply engraved lines, this map exemplifies how Arrowsmith found great success through his ability to attract both commercial and general viewers by combining aesthetic appeal and scientific knowledge. His unique historical notes were of anecdotal interest to navigators, pointing out spots where ships had been grounded, and, for example, where Columbus had landed. The most influential and respected map publisher of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Arrowsmith issued maps that were the result of careful synthesis rather than systematic, scientific inquiry.

AARON ARROWSMITH MAP OF NORTH AMERICA, 1811

      Est: $30,000 - $50,000

ARROWSMITH, Aaron (1750-1823). A Map exhibiting all the new discoveries in the interior parts of North America... 1795, with additions to 1811. Engraved map with original hand color in full. London: Arrowsmith, 1811. 50" x 58 1/4" sheet, 57" x 65" framed. Arrowsmith was the best mapmaker in the world at the beginning of the 19th Century. Full color example of Aaron Arrowsmith's map of North America, one of the seminal maps for the early history of the Transmississippi West and the primary map utilized by Lewis & Clark (1802 edition). The eighth issue of Arrowsmith's important and evolving map, updated over the years as new information on the geography of North America came to light, relying on exploring expeditions and other sources, and extensively on the fur traders and trappers of the Hudson's Bay Company. The present issue makes changes and additions to the waterways in Canada. The scale on the map is one inch equals 60 geometrical miles. The map extends south to 29' and in the west to Cook's Inlet, as with the first 1802 issue. Cook's tracks are shown. The projection is no longer a simple conic; south of 40' the meridians begin to curve in. For a description of early issues of this map of this, see Warren Heckrotte, "Aaron Arrowsmith's Map of North America and the Lewis and Clark Expedition" in The Map Collector 39, Summer 1987. AARON ARROWSMITH MAP OF THE UNITED STATES, 1796 - FIRST EDITION, ORIGINAL ISSUE

      Est: $50,000 - $70,000

ARROWSMITH, Aaron (1750-1823). A Map of the United States of North America... Engraved map with original hand color, dissected in 36 parts and mounted on linen. London: Arrowsmith, 1796. First Edition, original issue (Stewart 79a). 49 1/4" x 57" sheet. With "Tennassee Government" appearing as a territory below Kentucky. The Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are inaccurately and sketchily drawn, "very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map" (David Rumsey 3385.000). Both the 1796 and 1802 versions of Arrowsmith's map served as resources that Nicholas King consulted as he prepared his map for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Thomas Jefferson owned the 1802 map, purchased at the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. From 1795 to 1857 at least nineteen editions or revisions of Arrowsmith's map of "North America" were published by him or his successors. On the subsequent third edition of 1815 this map, the Missouri River system is based on Lewis and Clark's published map. Arrowsmith's 'Map of the United States of North America' is the most desirable from his well noted career. An acclaimed British cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith drafted accurate, detailed charts that earned him the titles of Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, extremely important distinctions during an era when Britain ruled the waves. One of the first great British cartographers of North America, Arrowsmith introduced a new standard of excellence in mapmaking in the late 18th century and almost single-handedly made London the center for the cartographic trade. Arrowsmith built his great success on this ability to attract both commercial and general viewers through his combination of visual and scientific appeal. His role in cartographic production was to gather the best available information from a wide variety of sources, weigh the relative merits of conflicting data, and compile the most accurate depiction possible of an area. Arrowsmith accomplished this synthesis better than any other commercial mapmaker of his day and, as a result, his maps were the most sought after and highly prized on three continents.

      Arrowsmith New Map of Mexico

      Est: $35,000 - $50,000

Arrowsmith, Aaron (1750-1823). A New Map of Mexico and Adjacent Provinces... Engraved map with hand color in outline. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1810. First Edition, First Issue. 26 x 33 1/8 inches sheet each, 31 x 37 1/2 inches framed each. The most accurate map of Texas up to the War of 1812 and a rare first edition foundational map of Texas and the Southwest. Comprable: Dorothy Sloan Rare Books, 1999, $39,100. The Best Early Nineteenth-Century map of Mexico. This is a first edition example of Aaron Arrowsmith's landmark "New Map of Mexico and Adjacent Provinces...” It is a particularly rare and important foundation map of Texas and the southwest. The coverage of this map takes in all of the present day southwestern United States from the Upper and Lower Mississippi River to California south of the 42nd parallel. The present example depicts the boundary of the Texas Louisiana border along the Mermento River and follows the official Spanish position as reported by Humboldt. This is the first large-scale map to depict the important discoveries of Pike and Humboldt in the southwest. It became highly influential to other cartographers of the era. The second state bears an altered border moved further west and north running along the Sabine and Red Rivers, as accepted by both the United States and Spain in the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819. It includes insets of the Valley of Mexico, Veracruz and Acapulco. “Perhaps the most respected mapmaker of the early nineteenth century, Aaron Arrowsmith produced maps which were the result of a careful synthesis of all of the information he could obtain. His map of Mexico which first appeared in 1810 was bitterly criticized by Humboldt as a blatant plagiarism of his own map. For his improved rendering of the Brazos River, if for no other reason, Arrowsmith's depiction of the Texas area merits inclusion as a landmark in the cartography of the region” (Crossroads of Empire - Amon Carter Museum exhibit, June 1981). “In interior detail…the Arrowsmith maps are quite distinct, with [that of] Mexico being far superior. Most noticeably, Arrowsmith added the Brazos River, which he had omitted entirely on the 1803 map, and he correctly named the Trinity River, which he had previously called the ‘Rio Arrokisos'” (Wheat, Transmississippi West, pp. 27-28).

Aaron Arrowsmith (1750 - 1823). Engraved wall map with original hand color, backed on linen. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1803. In four sections: each app. 25” x 38 ½” (total dimensions: 4’2” x 5’5”). "This seminal chart of Florida, the West Indies, and the Spanish dominions in America is the most celebrated map by Arrowsmith, and today the most rare. An acclaimed British cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith drafted accurate, detailed charts that earned him the titles of Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, extremely important distinctions during an era when Britain ruled the seas. One of the first great British cartographers of North America, Arrowsmith introduced a new standard of excellence in mapmaking in the late 18th century and almost single-handedly made London the center for the cartographic trade. Arrowsmith’s phenomenally rare, seminal chart of Florida, the West Indies, and the Spanish dominions in America was perhaps his most celebrated map, and today the most rare. Issued in the same year as the Louisiana Purchase, Arrowsmith’s map was invaluable for navigators and Europeans who held commercial interest in the Gulf of Mexico. Perhaps its most significant quality was its unequaled accuracy. No map up until this time held such precise and flawless detail, and certainly not on such a large scale. The map also held great esthetic appeal with its vivid outline color and crisply engraved lines. Arrowsmith built his great success on this ability to attract both commercial and general viewers through his combination of visual and scientific appeal. Advances in engraving techniques in early 19th-century England resulted in the ability to include a tremendous amount of written information on the map, and the vast scale allowed for minute detail; names on the coast of the Gulf were given in Spanish, sometimes with explanations in English. In Texas, Arrowsmith showed the Nueces River, the Rio del Norte, and inland, San Antonio. Galveston Bay is also delineated, with numbers indicating depths, and the detail is similarly meticulous throughout. Notations were included for place names, detailed depth soundings and locations of any navigational hazards, even including rocks above the water line, and dunes and spits along the coastline. Also included are notes about tides, current speeds, and magnetic variances. Arrowsmith included a great deal of practical information, such as location of fresh water and spots where vegetables could be found growing. This is only more true now that their historical value has become inestimable and their numbers have dwindled due to the effects of time and general neglect. Perhaps his most rare map, this chart of Florida and the West Indies is also one of his most noted, and represents a cornerstone item for any collection relating to these areas. "

AARON ARROWSMITH (1750-1823) Asia. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1 January 1801 [but c. 1810?]. Engraved wall map in 24 sections, hand-coloured in outline and mounted on linen, 1260 x 1470mm. overall, folding. (Slight waterstains at upper margin, some faint browning.) FINE WALL MAP dedicated to Major James Rennell (1742-1830) and including the track of the Lion 1793. The esteemed surveyor-general for the East India Company, Rennell had brought out a Bengal Atlas in 1781 and continued to publish maps of India during the 1790s. Arrowsmith's dedication probably reflects an obligation to him in regard to the mapping of India, though not all his information was so recent, parts of Japan apparently being taken from Jansson's sea chart of 1658. The Lion, commanded by Sir Erasmus Gower, was the ship in which Lord Macartney voyaged to China in his embassy of 1793-94.

      Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Chart of the East India Islands exhibiting the several passages between the Indian and Pacific oceans... additions to 1812. London: 1800 [but 1812]. Engraved four-sheet wallmap of Southeast Asian archipelago, each sheet 660 x 990mm. Title set at upper left sheet, graticuled border, grid at one degree intervals, numerous coastal soundings, wind directions, shoals indicated, with details of the best clipper routes to China at various months of the year, the routes of various English navigators marked. (Old crease marks along folds, left margin of southeastern sheet slightly soiled.) Window mounts. An impressive four sheet chart of the navigation routes through the southeast Asian archipelago to China and the Philippines. Arrowsmith was a very inventive and accurate mapmaker. This wallmap may have been commissioned specifically for an Asian trading company and was certainly aimed at English captains and companies trading to China and southeast Asia. The detail on depth soundings, winds, obstructions and general accuracy is a trademark of Arrowsmith's fine work. Arrowsmith came from Durham to London in 1770 and was employed by both Faden and John Cary. In 1790, he set up on his own and made his reputation with his 8 sheet world map on Mercator's projection, 1790. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the Hydrographical office of the Royal Navy sent its surveying ships Sulphur, Samarang, Herald and others to the region that accurate nautical charts became available.
