Eduardo Arroyo Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1937 - d. 2018

Eduardo Arroyo Rodríguez (26 February 1937 – 14 October 2018)[1] was a Spanish painter and graphic artist. He was also active as an author and set designer.

Arroyo, who was born in Madrid, studied art in his home city, but left Spain in 1958 because of his basic contempt for Francoist Spain, came to terms with Francisco Franco in his old age, Arroyo later described him as a "whore" and even lost his Spanish citizenship in 1974 (which he got back two years later, a year after the death of the Caudillo). In Paris, he befriended members of the young art scene, especially Gilles Aillaud, with whom he later collaborated in creating stage sets, but also the old master, Joan Miró. In 1964, he made his breakthrough with his first important exhibition. Over 20 years of great critical success and high esteem on the art market followed. In his old age, the ideologically and creatively uncompromising artist was as active as ever, even if it had seemed to have become somewhat quieter around his creations.

Stylistically, Arroyo's mostly ironic, colorful works are at the crossroads between the trends of nouvelle figuration or figuration narrative and pop art. A characteristic of his representations is the general absence of spatial depth and the flattening of perspective.

Arroyo also became known to a broad public through his many works as a set designer, as well as partially by his costume designs. In this relation, he cooperated since 1969 especially with the director Klaus Michael Grüber, who encouraged him in this activity. Arroyo created sets for, among others, the Piccolo Teatro in Milan, the Paris Opéra (in 1976, Richard Wagner's Die Walküre), the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin and the Salzburger Festspiele (in 1991, Leoš Janácek's Z mrtveho domu).

In 1982 he received Spain's National Award for Plastic Arts.[2]

Arroyo's stage play, Bantam, premiered at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel (Residenztheater) in Munich with great success in 1986, with his friend, Grüber, as director and Ailland and Antonio Recalcati for sets and costumes.

Arroyo's paintings are showcased at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid.

EDUARDO ARROYO (Madrid, 1937-2018). "La fanciulla del West", 1990. Work consisting of a hat-sculpture, a graphic work and a drawing.

                    Est: €16,000 - €18,000

EDUARDO ARROYO (Madrid, 1937-2018). "La fanciulla del West", 1990. Work consisting of a hat-sculpture, a graphic work and a drawing. Measurements: 35.5 x 27 cm; 53 x 45 cm (drawing frame) / 48 x 19.5 (plate); 75 x 53 cm (paper) and 84 x 62 cm (graphic work frame). The title of this work by Eduardo Arroyo refers us to Puccini's opera of the same name. The lady, of whom we see only the head in both the drawing and the graphic work, seems to refer to the protagonist of that Italian work, whose name was Minni. On both occasions she is represented with Arroyo's characteristic ironic bias, adorning her head with a cactus for a hat. In fact, Arroyo pours all of his inventiveness into the creation of a hat-sculpture that three-dimensionally reproduces what is represented on paper, as if it were props or costumes from Puccini's opera. He can interpret the cactus motif as a metaphorical image of the Californian desert where the opera's plot takes place. Painter, sculptor and engraver, Arroyo stands out as an important figure within the neofigurativist movement. After beginning his career in journalism, he began to paint at the end of the fifties, appearing for the first time at the Young Painting Salon in Paris in 1960. At the beginning of the sixties his plastic vocabulary moved under the North American influence of pop. art, and around 1964 his break with informal art became definitive. His first public impact occurred in 1963, when he presented a series of effigies of dictators at the III Paris Biennale that provoked protests from the Spanish government. That same year, Arroyo prepared an exhibition at the Biosca gallery in Madrid, which would open without his presence since he had to flee to France, pursued by the police; The exhibition was censored and closed a few days later. However, Arroyo's figurative option was slow to be accepted in Paris. The painter rejected the unconditional devotion to some avant-garde artists, such as Duchamp or Miró, which he considered imposed by fashion. Actually, his interest is to demystify the great masters and defend the role of the market as protector and thermometer of art, against the network of museums and influences funded with public money. In 1974, Arroyo was expelled from Spain by the regime, and would not recover his passport until Franco's death. However, his critical takeoff in Spain was not immediate, and would take until the early eighties. In 1982 he was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts, and anthological exhibitions were dedicated to him in the National Library of Madrid and the Pompidou Center in Paris. Currently, Arroyo is represented in the Reina Sofía National Museum in Madrid, the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. and the Modern Art Museum of Lille (France), among others.

EDUARDO ARROYO (Madrid, 1937-2018). "La française", 1989 Lithograph, copy H/C. Signed, dated and justified by hand. Size: 70 x 55 m.; 90 x 75,5 cm.(frame). Painter, sculptor and engraver, Arroyo stands out as an important figure in the neo-figurativist movement. A key figure in the new Spanish figuration, Arroyo came to prominence on the national art circuit only belatedly, from the 1980s onwards, after a two-decade period of withdrawal forced by the Franco regime. Today, his works hang in the most reputed Spanish museums and his creativity extends to theatrical scenographies and illustrated editions. Arroyo began his career in journalism, finishing his studies in 1957. He then left for Paris, fleeing the stifling Spanish political climate of the time. Although his first vocation was as a writer, a task he continues to pursue to this day, by 1960 he was already making a living as a painter. That year he took part for the first time in the Salon de Peinture Jeunesse in Paris. His critical attitude towards dictatorships, both political and artistic, led him to take controversial initiatives. He opted for figurative painting at a time when abstract painting was overwhelmingly dominant in Paris, and his early themes were reminiscent of "black Spain" (effigies of Philip II, bullfighters, dancers), worked in a caustic and unromantic manner. At the beginning of the 1960s his plastic vocabulary moved under the American influence of pop art, and in 1964 his break with informal art became definitive. His first public impact came in 1963, when he presented a series of effigies of dictators at the Third Paris Biennial, which provoked protests from the Spanish government. That same year, Arroyo prepared an exhibition at the Biosca gallery in Madrid, which opened without his presence as he had to flee to France, pursued by the police; the exhibition was censored and closed a few days later. However, Arroyo's figurative option was slow to be accepted in Paris. The painter rejected the unconditional devotion to certain avant-gardists, such as Duchamp or Miró, which he considered imposed by fashions. His real interest was in demystifying the great masters and defending the role of the market as a protector and thermometer of art, as opposed to the network of museums and influences paid for with public money. In 1974, Arroyo was expelled from Spain by the regime, and would not recover his passport until Franco's death. However, his critical breakthrough in Spain was not immediate, and was delayed until the early 1980s. In 1982 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas, and anthological exhibitions were held at the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arroyo is currently represented at the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Lille (France), among others.

EDUARDO ARROYO (Madrid, 1937-2018). "Ramoneur", 1982. Patinated bronze and wood. Exemplary 1/6. Presents labels on the base of the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and Bernard Hutton Galleries (New York). It has the name of the foundry "Magisa". Signed, dated and numbered. Measurements: 44.5 x 25 x 27 cm; 4 x 25 x 25 x 25 cm (base). The Spanish translation of Ramoneur means chimney sweep, a concept that interested Arroyo throughout his career as he resorted to it on numerous occasions. Thus exploring the figure of the chimney sweep from different artistic techniques and materials. In this particular case it is a bronze bust whose aesthetic is completely contemporary. The author abandons the idea of a traditional bust that starts from the shoulders and chooses to finish the sculpture at the neck. He presents us with a protagonist wearing a top hat and with a face based on geometry, using for its composition different planes and superimposed forms in tune with a post-cubist aesthetic. However, the way in which he models the neck is defined by more organic, fluid and expressive forms that reveal the sculptor's tactile quality. One of the common traits in Arroyo's representations of the "Ramoneurs" is that they possess a certain caricatured sense as can be seen in this piece. Arroyo began his career in journalism, finishing his studies in 1957. He then left for Paris, fleeing the asphyxiating Spanish political climate of the time. Although his first vocation was as a writer, a task he continues to this day, by 1960 he was already making a living as a painter. That year, he participated for the first time in the Salón de Pintura Joven in Paris. His critical attitude towards dictatorships, both political and artistic, pushed him to controversial initiatives. He opted for figurative painting during the years of the overwhelming dominance of abstract painting in Paris, and his first themes were reminiscent of "black Spain" (effigies of Philip II, bullfighters, dancers), worked in a caustic and unromantic key. At the beginning of the sixties his plastic vocabulary moved under the North American influence of pop art, and in 1964 his break with informal art became definitive. His first public impact came in 1963, when he presented a series of effigies of dictators at the Third Paris Biennial, which provoked protests from the Spanish government. That same year, Arroyo prepared an exhibition at the Biosca Gallery in Madrid, which was inaugurated without his presence since he had to flee to France, pursued by the police; the exhibition was censored and closed a few days later. However, Arroyo's figurative option took a long time to be accepted in Paris. The painter rejected the unconditional devotion to certain avant-gardists, such as Duchamp or Miró, which he considered imposed by fashions. Actually, his interest is to demystify the great masters and defend the role of the market as protector and thermometer of art, as opposed to the network of museums and influences paid for with public money. In 1974, Arroyo was expelled from Spain by the regime, and he would not recover his passport until Franco's death. However, his critical takeoff in Spain was not immediate, and would be delayed until the early eighties. In 1982 he was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts, and anthological exhibitions were dedicated to him at the National Library in Madrid and the Pompidou Center in Paris. Currently, Arroyo is represented at the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Lille (France), among others.

EDUARDO ARROYO (Madrid, 1937-2018). Bag-sculpture "La Africana" or "La maleta del Doctor Schweltzer", 1972. Black leather and metal structure. Polychrome wooden handles. Limited edition. Exemplary 13/30. Signed inside the bag. Measurements: 25 x 30,5 x 8,5 cm; 36,5 cm (height including the banana). Eduardo Arroyo brings out in his sculpture "La Africana" or "La maleta del Doctor Schweltzer" his most surrealist side, placing in contiguity apparently incongruous objects (a bag and a banana) which only thanks to an analogical exercise can manage to maintain some symbolic relationship. The artist created this work on the occasion of his exhibition "Opere e Operette" in Milan, which included all kinds of works from his production. He went to the flea market in the cosmopolitan city to buy 36 old bags, to which he added a banana. The duality of the title derives from two apparently distant concepts, albeit charged with great symbolic power and even related to each other; on the one hand, the "Africana", since all the titles of the exhibition "Opere and Operette" were taken from operas: Aida, the African, the Force of Destiny, etc. According to Arroyo himself, "Milan is very operatic and that had its charm"; as to the reason for "Schweltzer's Suitcase", Arroyo says "Dr. Schweitzer was a character that everyone thought was charming, but I never really liked him because the charity of Europeans on the black continent has always seemed suspicious to me. It is true that good things were done, but... Dr. Schweitzer had created some well-known hospitals in black Africa that made him very popular. A French author even wrote a play entitled Il est minuit, Docteur Schweitzer". The painter himself confesses that the work we present here is a totally daring and groundbreaking piece that only the bravest people dared to wear in Milan in the 1970s. A painter, sculptor and engraver, Arroyo stands out as an important figure in the neo-figurativist movement. After beginning his career in journalism, he began to paint in the late 1950s, appearing for the first time at the 1960 Salon de Pintura Joven. At the beginning of the 1960s his plastic vocabulary moved under the American influence of Pop Art, and in 1964 his break with informal art became definitive.
