MANUEL ARROYO Y LORENZO (Murcia, 1854-1902). "Musketeer", 1881. Watercolour on paper. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 47 x 33 cm; 86 x 65 cm (frame). Paintings of musketeers became popular during the 19th century, linked to a romantic ideal in which they were admired as the perfect example of a gentleman. In this case, the author resorts to a historical anachronism, presenting the figure in the centre of the scene, dressed in elegant clothes, with his musket strapped around his waist. The image is set in an outdoor setting, where the artist uses a loose brushstroke to introduce elements that demonstrate his technical quality and his mastery of watercolour.
