Lower right dated: "1843". Date: 1843 Description: This monochrome depiction shows a group of figures dressed in traditional costume. They are moving through an arched gateway characterised by a play of shadows and leading into an illuminated courtyard, the details of which are only hinted at in the contrasting light. A central figure, a child with a hat, leads the viewer's gaze into the interior of the picture, while the skilfully placed lighting effects emphasise the plasticity and textural qualities of the scenario. This painting by the Mannheim artist Mathias Artaria was acquired by the art-loving Bavarian King Ludwig I in 1841 and remained in the royal collection or the Neue Pinakothek until 1925, when it was transferred to the Wittelsbach Ausgleichsfond.
