Attributed to HENDRICK AERTS (1565/1575 -1603). Untitled. Oil on panel. Engatillada. It has a Dutch style frame. Size: 75 x 100 cm; 96 x 120 cm (frame). In this work the painter traces with meticulous brushstroke and rigorous and academic drawing the interior of a great church in classical style, following the inheritance of the painters of church interiors of the 17th century Holland, since it is a genre very much treated in Europe in this century. It is no longer a descriptive depiction of a specific setting, but an almost documentary reproduction of a historical space that is conceived as such, resulting in a work that combines the decorative sense that was so attractive to the clientele of the period with the attention to detail characteristic of a scientific work. Hendrick Aerts was a Flemish painter and draughtsman known for his images of architecture. He was active in painting in Gdansk and Prague. Little is known about the origins, training and life of Hendrick Aerts. Originally it was assumed that he was from Lille. Recent research, notably by Bernard M. Vermet, has challenged earlier assumptions about the artist's life and it is now assumed that Aerts is a native of Mechelen. Vermet has further suggested that the clear influence of the work of the Flemish architectural painter Paul Vredeman de Vries is probably due to the fact that Aerts was a pupil of Paul Vredeman de Vries. The training probably took place when both artists were resident in Gdansk in the period 1592-95. Aerts would have accompanied Vredeman de Vries to Prague from 1596 to 1599, where he worked as his assistant on the decoration of the ceilings and reception rooms in the castle of Emperor Rudolf II. From 1599 Aerts may have returned to Gda?sk, where he probably died in 1603. Only a few paintings by Hendrick Aerts have survived. Research attributes fewer than ten paintings to him. Like his presumed master Paul Vredeman de Vries, he painted exclusively fantastic architectural works of imaginary, luxurious palaces and church interiors, in which the human figures often represent allegories.

Interior of a cathedral with a procession and several other figures. Canvas. 17th-century work after the engraving by Jan van Londerseel after the lost original by Hendrick Aerts. Provenance: Nancy, ex collection canon Barb...; Antwerp, private collection This composition, of which Aerts was the inventor, was very famous in its time, thanks to an engraving by Londerzeel; Flemish as well as Dutch painters (such as Daniel de Blieck) continued to use it well into the seventeenth century. This painting, which was executed around 1600, was one of the first experiments in the new genre of the church interior. Very little is known of the artist, Hendrick Aerts, other than his working period. Nonetheless, his influence proved to be enormous, as the number of painters who followed him by copying his composition was impressive.
