            Richard Artschwager - At Castelli's - 1991 Offset Lithograph 37.5" x 24"

            Est: $200 - $250

"At Castelli's" by Richard Artschwager, 1991 Unsigned Offset Lithograph. Paper size is 37.5 x 24 inches, with an image size of 37.5 x 24 inches. The Offset Lithograph is from an unknown edition size. and is not framed. The condition was rated A: Mint. Additional details: This 1991 reproduction by Richard Artschwager presents an abstract work that visually resembles a hinge set in the corner of a wall. The artwork's design suggests a functional element that supports or allows for the movement of the walls, embodying Artschwager’s exploration of objects and their spatial relationships. The ornamental quality and the sculptural aspect of the piece reflect Artschwager’s interest in the intersection between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. By incorporating elements that suggest mechanical or structural functions, the work challenges traditional boundaries of art and architecture. This approach aligns with Artschwager's broader artistic practice, which often interrogates the nature of everyday objects and their representation.

Notation: Titled, signed and dated verso: Handle III (Diptych) Artschwager `80. Provenance: - Leo Castelli Gallery, New York - Linda Macklowe, New York - Daniel Weinberg Collection, San Francisco - Private collection USA (through descent) - Leo Koenig Inc, New York (label) - Private collection USA - Kasper König Collection, Berlin Exhibitions: - Ambach & Rice, Los Angeles 2013/14 - Leo Koenig Inc, New York 2022 Beginnings in Munich Born in Washington, D.C., the son of a botanist and an artist, Artschwager grew up in the spectrum of science and art. At the age of eight, he accompanied his mother to Munich for a year, where she studied at the academy. His studies of natural sciences were interrupted by his enlistment in the US Army and were not completed until 1948. This was followed by studies in painting with the French artist Amedée Ozenfant in New York. In order to make a living, Artschwager established himself as a cabinetmaker for furniture and later for altars, whose influence on his later art is evident. International reception of the works Artschwager's works complement the discourse on the concept of sculpture in the 1960s, which is also reflected in the art historical reception. His first group exhibitions in 1964 were followed a year later by his first solo exhibition at Leo Castelli. In 1969, he was invited by Harald Szeemann for the exhibition "Live In Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form" and presented three years later at documenta 5, curated by Szeemann. In total, Artschwager exhibited his works at five documentas and in 1976, together with other artists, he participated in the American Pavilion at the 37th Venice Biennale. Ambivalence "Handle III" is a continuation of the concept of combining furniture elements with artistic objects, which is reminiscent of a misappropriated cabinet. A pyramid shape running towards the back in the middle of the work contrasts with the smooth beige surface hanging on the wall like a painting. On the right, a cupboard door can be folded down with a metal handle, although this only covers forty percent of the surface. The artist uses the wood-imitating Formica laminate here, which he consistently favors for his works. Artschwager takes up the classic genre concept for a painting, which thematizes the artistic execution of perspective through the deepening in the middle of the picture. The cupboard door on the right is reminiscent of a wing from an altarpiece, which at the same time, as a functionless cabinet door, reduces an element of furniture to absurdity. Richard Artschwager Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea die Trento e Rovereto/Guggenheim Bilbao, Mailand 2019, cat. no. 108, p. 85, ill. The ordinary and the obscure Richard Artschwager's oeuvre contains elements of the leading art movements of the 1960s such as Pop Art, Concept Art and Minimal Art. Basically, the works are based on everyday objects. On the one hand, these can be perceived visually and, on the other, the works confront the viewer physically. The ambivalence between the ordinary and the obscure is realized through the suspension of functionality. His "Tables" or "Pianos" are imitations of objects whose use is rendered obsolete by their execution and at the same time their uselessness is translated into Artschwager's own aesthetic. Handle "Handle I" from 1962 marks the beginning of Artschwager's aesthetic ambivalence. Assembled into a rectangle from elements of a polished wooden handrail, the work defines itself as a sculpture. At the same time, the artwork is installed hanging on the wall like a painting, whereby the materiality of the wood in its special form is reminiscent of a frame that reveals and encloses the view of the empty wall. The peculiarity of this construction also sharpens the viewer's perception by removing the functionality of a railing that should actually be touched. "Handle I" by Artschwager also complements the discourse on the concept of sculpture in the 1960s, which is reflected in its reception in art history. Kasper König and Richard Artschwager Kasper König met Artschwager in New York at the end of the 1960s and a close friendship developed between the two. He left his apartment in New York to Artschwager when he took up his position in Halifax. Their collaboration is also reflected in numerous exhibitions: in 1987 Artschwager creates his first concrete sculpture in public space for Skulptur Projekte Münster and in 1993 his works are exhibited at Portikus in Frankfurt am Main under the title "Archipelago". Richard Artschwager also gives the speech for Kasper König at the presentation of the Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence 2000 at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. The origin of the creative direction The beginning of the creative exploration of sculpture and painting in Richard Artschwager's work was established in 1962 with the work "Portrait I". As the origin of a new phase in Artschwager's oeuvre, the work combines an ordinary bedroom chest of drawers with a framed painting showing a portrait of a man. Titled the first in the series, this work marks the beginning of Artschwager's own aesthetic, which defined him until his death in 2013. Combination of everyday and artistic aspects "Portrait I" unites Artschwager's new artistic direction with his profession as a carpenter and furniture maker. Since the early 1960s, Artschwager has been painting with acrylic on Celotex panels, which, with their irregular surface, are used for insulating houses, but in combination with paint create an aesthetic of handmade paper. At the beginning, Artschwager chose photographic models of architecture as his subject, but quickly switched to portraits, such as "Baby" in 1962. This is followed by the piece of furniture with five drawers on small castors, whose gray coated grain - similar to a grisaille - contradictorily offsets the wooden materiality - the painted portrait becomes an object, the commode becomes a painting. New paths Throughout his career, Artschwager repeatedly painted portraits with the framed Celotex panels - of the art dealer Holly Solomon in "Portrait of Holly", 1967-68 in the Fischer Collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or the then American president "Geo. W. Bush", 2002 in the Yale University Art Gallery. The combination of framed portrait and chest of drawers was continued a year later in "Portrait II" from 1963, now also in Yale. Here Artschwager uses the material Formica, a laminate. The two elements, portrait and chest of drawers, are now united in a brown frame, divided by yellow surfaces and lines, and are only related to their predecessor in terms of their structure.
