      Raoul Arus,  French 1848-1921-  A French soldier with his horse drinking from a puddle;  oil on panel, signed 'R. Arus' (lower left), 21.7 x 27 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Arus's paintings almost exclusively depict figures in 19th-century military dress, either in battle or on the march, with his works typically presenting cavalry officers either mounted on or accompanied by their horses. The present work places a particular emphasis on the close relationship between a soldier and his horse, with the central figure looking on with care and concern as his horse pauses to drink some water on their journey.

(26.8 x 34.9 cm.) The letter states that this was painted in the Franco-Prussian war when he was a member of the Society of French Artists.
