Henry Ary (American, 1807–1859) Extensive Landscape Along the Hudson River with a Castle in the Distance

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Henry Ary (American, 1807–1859) Extensive Landscape Along the Hudson River with a Castle in the Distance Signed indistinctly 'Ary' bottom left, oil on canvas 24 x 35 in. (61 x 88.9cm) Provenance Benefit Street Gallery, Providence, Rhode Island. Acquired directly from the above. Collection of Mr. Harry Struck, New York, New York. Litchfield County Auctions, Litchfield, sale of July 13, 2012, lot 2631522. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, Connecticut. Condition report: Frame: 31 5/8 x 41 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. The unlined canvas in overall fair to good condition. The surface of the work appears slightly dusty and might benefit from a (very) light cleaning. With very light, diagonal craquelure, mostly visible in the sky. Examination under UV light reveals some (if not most) of the aforementioned craquelure have been meticulously inpainted. Some minor, scattered restoration (pinpoint-like) in the sky, especally at upper right corner. The two main areas of restoration are a 2 1/2 in. long scratch at upper center in the sky, and a repaired tear (about 3 x 3 in.) at center, just above the castle. Some older restoration seen on the castle tower and nearby (in the river). With remnants of old greenish varnish in the bottom corners (where the darkest, green areas are). With some restoration at bottom let corner, at bottom center along the outer edge of the canvas. The bottom right quadrant seems relatively untouched, except for a small area of inpainting on one of the trees close to the right outer edge. See Specialist's pictures for more details.

    • Henry Ary (1802-1859): A Camp in the Catskills

Henry Ary (1802-1859): A Camp in the Catskills

      Est: $15,000 - $30,000

Oil on canvas, 1853, signed 'H Ary' and dated lower left, lined.30 x 44 in., 38 1/2 x 52 in. (frame).Note: Hudson, New York painter Henry Ary settled here in 1844 and spent most of his career painting in the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains. On the west side of the Hudson River, Ary was influenced by his mentor, Thomas Cole, who had encouraged him to abandon portrait painting to focus on the landscape of the Hudson Valley. Ary sketched on the Hudson River and in the Catskills with his friend, Hudson River School painter Sanford Gifford. This landscape offered them interesting compositions with contrasting textures of mountains, water, forest and shoreline. This view in the Catskill Mountains is an example of the contrasts and variety of the Hudson Valley and also shows Ary's commitment to a progressive philosophy in landscape painting that recognizes man's imprint on the local landscape.

HENRY ARY (1802-1859): VIEW OF SOUTH BAY AND MOUNT MERINO

      Est: $6,000 - $9,000

HENRY ARY (1802-1859): VIEW OF SOUTH BAY AND MOUNT MERINO Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined. 18 x 26 in., 25 x 33 in. (frame). Provenance: William H. Tobey; thence by descent. Exhibited and Literature: Ruth Piwonka, Mount Merino, Views of Mount Merino, South Bay and the City of Hudson painted by Henry Ary and his Contemporaries, July 18 - Oct. 3, 1976. Note: Painter Henry Ary was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and came to live in Hudson in 1844 when he was in his thirties. He painted in and around Hudson for most of his career and lived here for the rest of his life. Ary began his career as a portrait painter in Albany. In 1833, he moved to Catskill where he met painter Thomas Cole and, inspired by the beauty of the Hudson Valley and encouraged by Cole, began painting landscape subjects. Ary taught painting at the Hudson Female Academy where Elihu Gifford, father of Sanford Gifford, was a trustee. Ary and Gifford went on sketching trips together in the Catskills, and it has been said that the older Ary was an influence on the younger artist. Ary also instructed Hudson River School artist John Bunyan Bristol. The landscape surrounding the City of Hudson in the nineteenth century offered artists interesting compositions with contrasting textures of mountains, water and flat shoreline. The view of Mount Merino from Hudson was widely painted at this time, but no artist painted this scene more than Henry Ary. Until the 1850's, Mount Merino and South Bay were known mostly for their agricultural and commercial purposes. It was Henry Ary's paintings of this site that focused attention on the natural beauty of this landscape.
