Benji Asada (1899-1984) Japanese, Woodblock Print. Titled "The Pagoda of Ninnaji Temple'. Printed by Uchida. Size: 15 3/4 x 10 1/4 in. #2790 . Benji Asada was a prominent Japanese painter and printmaker known for his contributions to the Sosaku Hanga (Creative Prints) movement. He was born in 1899 in Kameoka, near Kyoto, with the original family name Nakanishi. He studied at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, where he was influenced by his teacher Nishimura Goun. Initially focused on painting, Asada also created woodblock prints, participating actively in the Kyoto and Tokyo art scenes. He was a founding member of the Kyoto Sôsaku-Hanga Kyôkai in 1929 and was known for both his Sosaku Hanga and Shin Hanga works. Asada’s prints, which often depicted serene landscapes and natural scenes, were published by Uchida in the 1950s. After World War II, he shifted his focus entirely to Nihonga, a traditional Japanese painting style. In 1959 he received the Minister of Education's Prize at the Second Shin Nitten Exhibition. In 1965 he won the Japan Art Academy Prize and served as an adviser for official fine arts exhibitions. He passed away in his studio in 1984.

BENJI ASADA 麻田辨自 (Japan, 1899-1984) Poppy” Oban tata-e / woodblock print 1970s to 1980s Publisher: Uchida 1970-1980’s Notes: 1. Benji Asada is a typical Kyoto painter and printmaker. He received his art training at Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. Benji Asada was an honor student of Goun Nishimura. In the 1920s and 1930s he was active with the Kyoto and Tokyo Sosaku Hanga artists. He contributed to different group series - Creative Prints of Twelve Months in New Kyoto and 100 Views of New Japan. He worked in Japanese-style painting and did many woodblock prints, mostly landscapes and flowers, published by Uchida. His artist's name is Tangyu 丹牛. 2. See an identical print preserved at the Honolulu Museum of Art, Hawaii, The United States of America, under accession number 25294.
