Koomwartok was the son of graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona of Cape Dorset.
His brothers are Cape Dorset sculptors Kaka and Kiawak Ashoona. Koomwartok's
wife, Mary Koomwartok Ashoona, and his son, Salomonie Ashoona, are sculptors
in Cape Dorset.
