      Born in 1931 Leninakan (Gyumri), Armenia, Rafael Atoyan graduated from the Terlemezian College of Fine Arts in 1948, and graduated from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in 1953. In 1960 he became a member of the Union of Artists of Armenia, and received the Meritorious Artist of Armenia award in 1982, as well as the First Prize in State Exhibitions in 1982 and 1983. Between 1960 and 1996, Atoyan participated in numerous group exhibitions in Armenia, the Soviet Union, and Europe. After the earthquake of 1988, he moved from his native city of Leninakan to Fresno, California. The works of Atoyan, whatever technique he uses, are always marked by an immediateness of emotion. Everything that his brush depicts, the paternal home and the land, a tree or a flower, a rock or a stream, all this is rendered with a human touch and warmed with genuine affection, that captivate the viewer with their elation and lyricism. This is the reason why Atoyan,s works attract circumstantial attention, the artist has not stalled in his development, the style was honed and crystallized along the way. His creative progress reminds us of the hard toil of a farmer resulting in the unrivaled beauty of art.
