        Douglas E. Atwill (American, b. 1933). "Aspens / Overcast II" acrylic on linen, n.d. Signed at lower right. Signature and title on verso. An enchanting painting by Douglas Atwill in which a grove of quaking Aspen trees take center stage, dazzling the viewer with their golden leaves shimmering as they turn in the fall and their dramatic white tree trunks. All is delineated with Atwill's signature loose brushwork and wonderful rendering of light. A beautiful composition featuring iconic Aspen trees which symbolize strength, resolve, and the ability to overcome fears and doubts, mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size: 9.5" L x 9.5" W (24.1 cm x 24.1 cm) Size: 14.375" L x 14.375" W (36.5 cm x 36.5 cm) About the artist: "Originally from Pasadena, California, Douglas Atwill moved to Texas as a teenager. At the University of Texas at Austin Atwill earned a degree in English Literature, following which he remained in Austin to become an art director for an ad agency. Atwill's career as a fine artist really began in 1969 when he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where over the years he exhibited his work at Blair Gallery, Gerald Peters Gallery, Meyer East, and Munson Gallery. Prominent major collections such as the New Mexico Museum of Art, Merrill Lynch, and the Exxon Mobil Corporation feature his work. The acrylic paintings Atwill creates on linen capture a range of subjects from the towering mesas of New Mexico, to sprawling Italian cityscapes, and most famously, bright midday scenes from his own gardens. Focusing on the natural and everyday, Atwill creates artwork that evokes the personal within the world around him. Landscapes and still life paintings equitably portray the vibrance in Atwill's vision, creating a passionate visual experience for the viewer. Not defined by success in painting, Atwill also gained prominence in Santa Fe as a designer, writer, and builder. Atwill's writing includes memoirs, short stories, novels, and poetry – much of which can be found in his published books of his paintings."
