George Copeland Ault (1891 - 1948) New York, Ohio / England

            Est: $1,500 - $2,500

George Copeland Ault (1891 - 1948) Watercolor and pencil on paper, Signed , measures 12.5" x 19" , w/frame 21" x 26.5"A precisionist and surrealist painter, especially noted for nocturnes, George Ault had the ability to depict lonely, everyday beauty of the world in a moment of absolute stillness. He also experimented with more traditional styles of realism, but was relatively untouched by modernist abstraction. His paintings were based on what he saw around him, many of them architectural subjects, and rendered in a quietly controlled manner. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and in 1899 moved to London with his family and attended the Slade School and St. John's Wood Art School. He traveled extensively on the Continent, which exposed him to avant-garde art movements. In 1911, he returned to the United States, and by 1937 was settled in Woodstock, New York where he freely explored his passion for the play of light at a favorite spot called Russell's Corners. He did numerous scenes that are almost entirely black, illuminated by a light high on an electrical pole. Although his childhood had been a happy one, from his mid 20s, he experienced mounting tragedy. His family lost their fortune; his mother died in a mental hospital; all three of his brothers committed suicide; he had a losing battle with alcoholism; and he lost his eyesight. He and his wife lived a reclusive, impoverished existence in Woodstock, without electricity or plumbing and his studio was exceedingly spartan. His own death in 1948 appeared to be suicide. In his work he explored a variety of modern styles, but about 1920 settled on architectural, urban themes rendered carefully and geometrically, with a great sense of design and careful paint application. The paintings had a romantic, poetic quality, and, perhaps reflecting his own personal sadnesses, often depicted isolated objects in spare settings as well as many nocturnes. By 1946, he turned to primarily abstract subjects, a world of random shapes and imaginary landscapes. He was a great admirer of Giorgio de Chirico, Italian surrealist, and Ault's later work showed more and more of this influence.

LITERATURE: L. George Ault's hauntingly beautiful Hunters in the Catskills captures the essence of the rural American landscape through the lens of one of America's most important yet often overlooked Modernists. The present work reflects the artist's distinctive vision and style that comingled Precisionism, Surrealism, and American folk painting, focusing not only on geometry, structure and abstraction, but also on the looming emotional sense of isolation and alienation Ault embraced at the culmination of his career. Ault moved to New York City from England in 1911 and shortly thereafter began painting urban cityscapes in a Precisionist style. While his reductive aesthetic and highly controlled manner of execution is often associated with artists like Charles Sheeler and Ralston Crawford, Ault did not observe beauty in the effects of industrialization and the growth of the American city, once referring to New York City as "the Inferno without the fire." While in New York, Ault was an active participant in the avant-garde art scene of the 1920s, where his brand of genius was instantly recognized. He remained active through the 1920s and was regularly included in group shows featuring the ‘new art' of the time at places like J.B. Neumann's New Art Circle, Edith Halpert's The Downtown Gallery, and The Whitney Studio Club. His canvases hung alongside works by Oscar Bluemner and Georgia O'Keeffe, attracting favorable press notice. In the early 1930s, however, the artist appeared to sink into a depression, drinking more heavily, breaking with art visionary and patron Edith Halpert, and alienating his circle of friends at the Whitney. Ault sought solace and peace following the untimely deaths of his father and two brothers by escaping New York for the summer months in Woodstock around this time. Ault moved permanently to Woodstock in 1937 with his wife, Louise, after shunning the suggestion of psychotherapy in the city. Once settled into the Catskills, George and Louise avoided the artist's community and instead lived modestly in solitude. The Woodstock vicinity provided inspiration for a new burst of creativity, and this period reflects a flowering of the surrealist, primitive, and romantic influences that had earlier distinguished Ault from the more straightforward Precisionists. During the Woodstock period, Ault occasionally endeavored without success to establish a relationship with a New York gallery; nonetheless, he was not forgotten. He was invited to participate in prestigious national exhibitions, including the 1942 "Artists for Victory" show at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Hunters in a Landscape was exhibited. He also exhibited at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1944), The Newark Museum (1944), The National Acade

            GEORGE AULT A Country House.

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

GEORGE AULT A Country House. Pencil on wove paper, 1921. 200x230 mm; 8x9 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto. Provenance: Suzanne and Maurice Vanderwoude, New York; private collection, Chicago. Ault (1891-1948) was a talented though troubled American artist. Born in Cleveland, he spent his youth in London and studied art there before returning to New York in 1911. During the 1920s, following the death of his mother, Ault became an alcoholic, each of his three brothers committed suicide, and his family fortune was lost following the 1929 stock market crash. He moved with his second wife to Woodstock, New York, in 1937, and worked there the remainder of his career. He and his wife lived in a small rented cottage that had no electricity or indoor plumbing. Though he created many of his finest works during this challenging period in Woodstock, he had difficulty selling them and failed to gain critical success until after his untimely death in December 1948. Ault is often grouped with Precisionist painters such as Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) and Ralston Crawford (1906-1978) because of his unadorned representations of architecture and urban landscapes. However, the ideological aspects of Precisionism are not so apparent in his work. Much like Edward Hopper (1882-1967), Ault was more of a solitary artist. He painted what he saw around him, simplifying detail slightly into flat shapes and planes, and portraying the underlying geometric patterns of structures, in this way developing an individual modernist style that prefigured Ellsworth Kelly on other Minimalist artists of the later 20th century.

Ault '48 / by L.A. his wife Titled on stretcher: Miss Hollywood Property From A Distinguished New York Collection PROVENANCE: The artist; Mrs. Louise Ault, wife of the above; Robert Schoelkopf Gallery, Ltd., New York; Private collection, New York, acquired from the above, April 27, 1982; Estate of the above. A Precisionist and Surrealist painter, George Ault had the ability to encapsulate the everyday beauty of the world in a moment of absolute stillness, in varying styles throughout his oeuvre. His paintings were based on what he saw around him, many of them architectural subjects, and rendered in a quietly controlled manner. By 1946, he turned to primarily abstract subjects, a world of random shapes and imaginary landscapes. He was a great admirer of Giorgio de Chirico, the Italian Surrealist, and Ault's later work showed more and more of this influence, as evidenced by Miss Hollywood from 1948. Ault was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and in 1899 he moved to London with his family and attended the Slade School and St. John's Wood Art School. He traveled extensively in Europe, which exposed him to the avant-garde art movements. In 1911, he returned to the United States, and by 1937 was settled in Woodstock, New York, where he freely explored his passion for the play of light at a favorite spot called Russell's Corners. He did numerous scenes that are almost entirely black, illuminated by a light high on an electrical pole. As Ault's work matured, he began to widen his artistic influences. He showed interest in the work of the Surrealists, particularly de Chirico. From him, Ault borrowed mysterious and improbable environments, where the habitual is transformed into strangeness. Both the architecture of the modern city and rural landscapes and seascapes are marked down in clear, communicative terms that suggest unfamiliarity as much as wonder at their beings. In the present work, Ault portrays the fabulous Miss Hollywood, resplendent in her nakedness, seated at the beach with nothing but a stiletto by her side. Miss Hollywood and her stiletto echo the angles and forms of the boats and sails in the distance. The figure's flat, unmodulated form appears almost unfinished. Whether an intentional artistic device or not, this contradictory effect serves to press the figure against the background, vivifying the interplay of dimensional space. These "unfinished" areas dually function to show his allegiance to drawing, whereby he probes the limits of form, its edge, where one color meets another. In 1948, the year in which he painted the present work, Ault was discovered dead five days after drowning in the Sawkill Brook on December 30, when he had taken a solitary walk in stormy and dark weather. The death was deemed a suicide by the coroner, though it was contested by his wife Louise as a fall caused by missing guardrails and ill health. Memorial exhibitions followed at the Woodstock Art Gallery and Milch Galleries. Miss Hollywood is one of the last oil paintings completed by Ault prior to his untimely death. HID01801242017
