Pencinta Ideologi narrates issues highlighted on social media through a multitude of entertainers attending a celebration, replete with lavish treats and presents. Each character is depicted in separate poses and emotions as if keeping a valuable secret. Various small grey colored masks in different expressions are also illustrated around the banquet table. Two of the masks held in the center have long noses, producing a sense of disconnect, or lies. The thick permeating fog and hurls of smoke suggest a vibrant but unsettling dystopian universe - a display of smoke and mirrors. Confronted with a lucid dream, the viewer is forced to narrate a scene from the grotesque encounter. The Dreamers illustrates a winged-man, slobbering in deep sleep. His face is resting on an ancient tortoise — its expression indicates astonishment. A couple of birds are hovering around them. Miniature stilt houses are positioned on the sleeping man’s palm. It looks a scene straight out of the serial Planet of the Apes media sci-fi franchise in which talking apes have the upper hand over human beings. The trinity of gorillas has benefited more from their unity than fighting among themselves like humans. Their colony seems self-sufficient and they have even learnt the art of making fire, of âcookingâ fish over a trestle, something the King of the Apes in the Disney cartoon, Jungle Book, failed to get from Mowgli. Even the chicken is roasted. They are definitely enjoying the feast, donât care about whatâs happening on the other side, where smokes and fire are rising from the ruins, the damaged sites due to war, conflict of interest. The artist possibly hinted on the meddling of affairs by the West on Middle East region, particularly the Palestine issue. This is one work which Ismail Awi stays closer to ârealityâ, for one given more to comicdom fantasy. This work was shown in The Young Contempo Showcase II at Galeri Prima in December 2017. 92 x 152cm

Ismail Awi draws heavily on gothic, surrealism and street culture, weaving them into his own intriguing narrative. In Desire, an enigmatic lion sits majestically in his territory, looking calm and composed, albeit surrounded by a multitude of human masks. Ismail Awi is a rising star who was among 12 artists featured in the Tanah Air Ku showcase at the Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was organised by Galeri Chandan and all the works belong to the Embassy. In July-August 2016, his work also made it to the Curate Henry Butcher exhibition called A Raya Celebration Of Generations In Art, and in January 2018, The Young Contempo Showcase II (organised by Curate Henry Butcher) held at Galeri Prima. Just like the artwork title, and the painting itself, his first debut in Sotheby's Hong Kong auction sale in April 2018 saw his pricing skyrocketed, and in the October 2018 edition, soared almost five times higher!

Representing a younger generation of artists emerging into the Malaysian art scene, Ismail Awi's art practice has been influenced by gothic culture, street art, and surrealism. The Great Gig In The Sky is a song by British rock band Pink Floyd. The track was selected by Rolling Stone magazine as the second greatest vocal performance of all time in rock history. Rich in symbolism and meaning, the plethora of figures are an integral component in this whimsical composition and is a highly original assemblage, establishing a deep impression with a visually striking composition. It’s up, up and away! Is it an aeroplane, is it a bird? No, it’s one of Ismail Awi’s zany characters on his Theatre of Absurd canvas. Here, a cigar-chomping man with a weather-beaten face like a mad professor persona of Stephen Hawkins ilk, what with the deranged sneer, blasting himself up the stratosphere above the clouds, and going, going, to where it is not known. But a money bag which presumably contains something like gold could help him get by wherever he lands, if he lands. You can never tell where and when, and how, it can come in useful even when dealing with aliens. “Nanoo, Nanoo!” as the Mork & Mindy television couple would say. To add to the bizarre scene, a crooked bird cage is placed over his head, and he’s sitting on a funny chair while holding a cup filled with drink (coffee? water? Maybe teh-tarik), and his only worldly possessions seem to be something wrapped up in a scroll, and of course, his tongkat with the insignia of a skull-head, his trademark. For good measure, there are some books, wrapped in a netting, in case he needs to refer to some facts.
