Biddee Baadjo Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1938 -

Biddee Baadjo, a senior Wangkatjungka woman, was born around 1938, near Purrpurn waterhole, located in her ancestral country in the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. When she was still a baby, she was snatched by an eagle from a coolamon, where she had been left sleeping by her mother when the family was out hunting. Her mother saw the eagle swoop away with the child, and chased after it. The eagle dropped Biddee into the spinifex grass, and her mother found her there crying.

During the 1940s Biddee Baadjo’s family joined the exodus of Wangkatjungka people who left the desert and travelled north towards the cattle station country of the Fitzroy Valley region. Aboriginal people followed the Canning Stock Route towards Bililuna, or travelled north west following a trail of creek beds and waterholes, that headed towards Fitzroy Crossing.

Biddee Baadjo has lived and worked at Wangkatjungka Community, located adjacent to Christmas Creek station, between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. Aboriginal artists began painting in the community in 1994. Biddee lived there with her husband, fellow painter Luurn Willie Kew. Biddee Baadjo’s paintings relocate the significant waterholes and hunting areas that have been the province of her family for countless generations.

BIDDEE BAADJO 1938- PIYURR (3 PARTS), 2009 acrylic on canvas 79 x 61 cm (each) artwork cataloguing details verso PROVENANCE Wangkatjungka Artists, WA Cat No. WJ 2234, 2233, & 2231 Japingka Aboriginal Art Gallery, WA Cat No. Jap 005516, 005515 & 005513 Private collection, NSW Accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Japingka Aboriginal Art Gallery ©Biddee Baadjo / Copyright Agency, 2024 These paintings by Biddee Baadjo depict her traditional country including the lands surrounding the waterhole called Piyurr. The waterhole itself is named after a small bird, red and black in colour that makes a call that sounds just like this- piyurr, piyurr. Biddee Baadjo's paintings record the main feature of the Great Sandy Desert- its long rows of parallel sandhills that flow out of the centre of the continent. Clearly visible from the air, these bands of sandhills affect wind and rain patterns and have developed localised conditions that form various biological pockets in the valleys between them. While all are dry and arid through most of the year, some remain bare while others have abundant vegetation. This country of the Great Sandy Desert has no surface water, and knowledge of its underground soaks and springs is critical to both animals and humans for survival. Wangkatjungka people have incorporated this knowledge of the water sources into their song cycles, a learned body of knowledge that has been passed down through the generations. The mapmaking of semi-nomadic people at the heart of this painting, as is a deep reverence for this traditional country that was the ancestral home to countless generations of the artist's family clan. Baadjo tells a story that illustrates the precariousness of life in those harsh conditions. When she was a baby she was stolen by a wedge-tailed eagle which took her from the coolamon - wooden basket - she was lying in. She was rescued, but the scars of the eagle's feet are still imprinted on her body. She says: "Mother was getting water, bird picked up Baadjo and flew off and took Baadjo towards its nest. The women chased the eagle; it threw Baadjo on the ground and she was covered in blood. She came good. But there are marks from its claw marks on both arms." Baadjo has maintained this connection with Piyurr and its adjacent waterholes through the past fifteen years by painting the country as she recalls it. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.
