Auction announcements 25th September 2014 Lot 50: The painting is being auctioned with frame. Oil on canvas Russia, 1901 Valerian Vitalievich Babadin (b. 1867) - Russian landscape and still life painter Signed (in Cyrillic) and dated lower left 'V. Babadin [...] 1901' Verso numbered, signed with monogram and illegibly inscribed (in Cyrillic) 'N3025 V.B. [...]' Dimensions: 51 x 67 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany The Russian artist Valerian Babadin is well-known for his idyllic landscape and marine paintings; his works fetch up to €5.000 on the international art market The present oil painting is a beautiful work by the Russian artist Valerian Vitalievich Babadin and dates back to 1901. It depicts a spruce forest with a river in the center and charming light effects on the water surface. The central trees and spruce needles have been executed with rich impasto to render the plants a plastic depth. In comparison, the edges of the painting have been painted in a rather impressionistic style, so that the contours seem to visually disappear. The painting is signed in Cyrillic and dated lower left 'V. Babadin [...] 1901'. It is verso numbered, signed with monogram and inscribed in Cyrillic 'N3025 V.B. [...]'. There is a small color abrasion in the center, which has been superficially restouched. Besides, the edges of the painting are affected by light marks due to previous framing. The size of the stretcher is 51 x 67 cm. Valerian Vitalievich Babadin (b. 1867) The Russian artist Valerian Vitalievich Babadin was active as a still life and landscape painter and was well-known among the academic artists of his time. He received his artistic training at the workshop of Yu. Konyushyna. His works were repeatedly published in pre-revolutionary publications in Russia.
