      JAMES GARDNER BABBIDGE (ME, 1844-1919) - Coastal Schooner "Frances Hatch" (built Castine, ME in 1854, lost 1877) passing her home port of Rockland, Maine, oil on canvas, signed lower right, dated Mar 1877, "Painted for Capt. A.N. Fales" (Captain and part owner) No. 7. Identifiable buildings still standing include the red brick 'Rankin Block' and the 'Granite Inn' off the bow and the 'Littlefield Memorial Church' off the stern. In lemon gold etched cove frame, OS: 25 1/2" x 34 1/2", SS: 21 1/4" x 29". Fine untouched condition, minor frame touch-up. Capt. Albert Norris Fales was lost at sea in 1888, aged 45.

      Outstanding oil on canvas Maine ship portrait of the coastal two-mast black-hulled schooner "Commerce". It sails left to right approaching Rockland Harbor with Owls Head Lighthouse off the bow. It is shown in full sail with four men on deck, the name by the stern. Several other sailboats are seen, all on a white tipped greenish ocean. This schooner was a Lime Hauling boat for the Rockland, Maine Perry Bros. Company. Signed with initials lower left in a barrel buoy with flag "JGB". Dated "1896" below frame edge. Housed in a period, and probably original, gesso decorated gilt frame. SIZE: 22" x 34". PROVENANCE: Hung in the office of Perry Bros. Co. in Rockland, Maine. Descended through the family of the owners. CONDITION: Scattered retouch, cleaned & conserved by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. 9-24839

      JAMES GARDNER BABBIDGE (American 1844-1919)

      JAMES GARDNER BABBIDGE (American, 1844-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE HANNAH MCLOON. Oil on canvas scene shows the three-mast black hulled barkentine sailing left to right into Rockland Harbor. Owls Head lighthouse is seen off the stern and the name can be seen at stern. The middle mast flying ship pennant and American flag off back mast. Seven figures on deck in colorful clothes and the ship is seen in full sail. Five smaller boats are seen with low land mass off bow. The just setting sun throws light on a colorful sky. Signed lower left "J G Babbidge" and dated illegibly. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt liner. Babbidge was born in Rockland, Maine and after duty in the Navy he resided on the coast of Maine where he first opened his studio in 1875. REFERENCE: Smithsonian Institutes Inventory No. IAP88720114. SIZE: 20" x 29-1/2". PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Painting appears to be in original, untouched condition. Very good. 9-92430 (3,000-5,000)
