      • Bach, Johann Sebastian: Missa Kyrie und Gloria aus h-Moll-Messe
        Apr. 18, 2023

Bach, Johann Sebastian: Missa Kyrie und Gloria aus h-Moll-Messe

        Est: €1,800 - €2,500

RSchild. (Zürich, Hans Georg Nägeli, 1833). -- MGG I, 1000. RISM A/I B 430.

EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY MANUSCRIPT SCORE OF THE KYRIE AND GLORIA OF THE MASS IN B MINOR, BWV 232, DERIVED FROM AN EARLY COPY OF BACH'S AUTOGRAPH the title-page inscribed "Nro: 1 Missa a 5 Voci. 2 Soprani. Alto. Tenore. Basso. 3 Trombe. Tamburi. 2 Traversi. 2 Oboi. 2 Violini. 1 Viola. e Continuo" (the composer not identified), the note "Manuscrit - Prix 36fr." apparently entered later on the title-page, the score written in a single scribal hand of evidently German provenance in brown ink on up to eighteen staves per page, the staves drawn by hand with a rastrum, with many corrections, cancellations and additions in another eighteenth-century hand in a lighter brown ink, some corrections also in pencil 84 leaves, folio (c.36 x 22.5cm), manuscript label to upper cover ("Messe Solemnelle Sans nom d'auteur un Partition") and spine ("Auteur anonim Messe Solennelle"), eighteenth-century pencil gathering numbers ('1' -'11'), contemporary paper-covered boards, no place or date [German, probably Berlin, provenance, c.1770 or shortly after], covers worn, some worming NOTE This is a new and unrecorded pre-publication source for one of Bach's greatest works, showing details evidently derived directly from the autograph manuscript . This score predates the first edition by up to sixty years. It was copied from a known early source for the Mass, the Berlin manuscript Am. B. 3 (in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin), dated 1769, which was itself copied by Bach's pupil J. P. Kirnberger directly from the autograph score (then in the possession of C.P.E. Bach). Quite a number of details are absolutely identical between Am.B. 3 and the present manuscript. The B minor Mass was not published until 1833. Some entries in the manuscript are of particular significance as they show a direct line of descent from Bach's autograph: namely, the marking 'Nro: 1' on the title-page and the alteration of the designation 'Traversi' to 'Traverso' at the beginning of the 'Domine Deus'. Moreover, as in Kirnberger's copy, the title page and head title in the present manuscript make no reference to the identity of the composer. The numerous textual corrections to the manuscript - affecting note pitches, rhythm, phrasing etc. - are an additionally intriguing feature, and merit further investigation. The Kyrie and Gloria were composed by Bach as a self-contained Missa and presented, in the form of a set of parts, to the Elector Friedrich August II in Dresden in 1733. The addition of other movements, to form the mighty Mass in B minor, took place at the end of the following decade. This manuscript, which long predates Nägeli and Simrock's 1833 published score of the Kyrie and Gloria (see lot 6 in the sale in these rooms on 22 May 2003), is not listed by Schmieder among the manuscript sources for BWV 232. The reception history of the B minor Mass is indeed little known and intriguing. Although the work did not appear in print until the 1830s, manuscript copies of it were in circulation among the increasingly large circle of admirers of Bach's music. Beethoven, for example, is known to have had a copy. Bach's original conception, as a two-movement mass for German Protestant consumption, is contained in this manuscript. It is particularly interesting that this German manuscript appears to have been sold in France at a later date, adding a whole new aspect to the Rezeptionsgeschichte of Bach's music. We are most grateful for the kind assistance of Professor Christoph Wolff and Dr Peter Wollny in preparing our description of this lot.

. THE LOST MANUSCRIPT OF THE TRANSPOSED CONTINUO PART OF THE CANTATA 'ES IS EIN TROTZIG UND VERZAGT DING', BWV 176, FROM THE ORIGINAL SET OF PERFORMING MATERIALS FOR THE PREMIERE IN LEIPZIG ON 27 MAY 1725, BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN. in the hand of an unidentified copyist (Anon. I Id), extensively and thoroughly revised and annotated by Johann Sebastian Bach, including the addition of continuo figuring throughout, phrase and expression marks, tempo and dynamic indications (some evidently added at a later date), pauses, corrections to notes, at least one movement cue and Bach's personal motto at the end ("Fine S[oli]D[eo] G[loria]"); notated in brown ink, on twelve-stave paper, with (incorrect) note of authenticity at the foot of the final page: "Handschrift von Joh: Sebast. Bach Zeuge dessen F.W. Jähns, Königl Preuss: Musikdirektor" 4 pages, large folio, (32.5 x 21.5cms), Leipzig, shortly before 27 May 1725; paper strengthened at right-hand edge, a little paper-loss through ink deterioration, otherwise in good condition NOTE This is an important Bach rediscovery. The manuscript was last recorded as being auctioned by Otto Haas in London in 1935. It was formerly in the possession of Edward Speyer, the friend of Elgar, who died in 1934. The manuscript was not available for scrutiny by scholars and appears as among the 'lost' sources in the Neue Bach Ausgabe (I/15, 1965) and in the Kritischer Bericht (1968). Other original parts for this cantata, formerly in the possession of Bach's eldest son Wilhelm Friedmann Bach, were sold in these rooms on 11 November 1982 (Lot 6). Those parts included three untransposed continuo parts, none of which had figuring in Bach's hand, though they (and most of the other parts) had been reviewed by the composer. The autograph full score (which was once owned by Bach's second son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach), survives in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Mus. Ms. Bach P 81. There are a number of extremely interesting features about this new manuscript. First, the extent of Bach's work on the manuscript: Bach's annotations are present in practically every bar. While he often added his own personal motto at the end of the full scores of his cantatas, it is very unusual for him to do this at the foot of the separate parts. Perhaps its inclusion reflects the amount of work Bach himself devoted to this instrumental part. Secondly, uniquely, this part has the word "Coro" at the head of the manuscript (This is not present in the autograph full score). This word does not appear to be in either Bach's or the copyist's hand. The cantata was performed at least once later in Bach's career in Leipzig: there are markings in his later hand on this manuscript, notably the piano and forte marks. The other instrumental parts contain similar annotations. Es ist ein trotzig und verzagt Ding was composed for Trinity Sunday 1725. It is scored for four-part chorus, two oboes, oboe da caccia, strings and bass. It is in six movements, an opening chorus, two recitatives, two arias and chorale. We should like to acknowledge the assistance of Dr Peter Wollny in the cataloguing of this manuscript.

Herz, Bach-Quellen in Amerika/Bach Sources in America (1984) CATALOGUE NOTE we have no record of the second part of the clavier-übung, containing some of bach's greatest works for keyboard, being offered for sale at auction during the last thirty years. Editions of Bach's works published during his lifetime are, in any event, of the greatest rarity; only some nine or ten were published at all. Clavier-Übung II is considerably rarer than Clavier-Übung I: of the fifteen copies located by the Neue Bach Ausgabe, only one is in America (Yale University) and there are none there in private hands. No autographs survive for either the Italian Concerto or the French Overture. Taken as a whole, the four parts of the Clavier-Übung represent the apogee of Bach's writing for the keyboard, whether for harpsichord, as in the case of Clavier-Übung I (1731), II (1735) and IV (1741-2), or for organ, as in Clavier-Übung III (1739). With the Concerto in the Italian Style, BWV 971, from the second part of the Clavier-Übung, Bach provided an example of the most up-to-date and fashionable style of writing in music. As Christoph Wolff in TNG observes, 'it embodies the ultimate stage in the process of transcribing instrumental concertos for keyboard, and stands in contrast to [the] Overture in the French Manner BWV 831 which, more markedly than the partitas, represents what was specifically French in harmony, rhythm, ornamentation and melodic invention'. In order to correct the very large number of errors contained in the first edition, a second issue was prepared which, according to Walter Emery, appeared before November 1736. The main differences concern the correction of the word 'verferdiget' (to 'verfertiget') in the title-page, and the re-engraving of pages 20-22, containing the courante, the two gavottes and the two passepieds. An indication that these alterations were made at Bach's instigation is provided by a copy of the first issue with Bach's manuscript corrections in the British Library.
