CONTACT US SKU#: 129313 US Shipping $49 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: John Backstrom was born in Meriden, Connecticut and educated in public schools in Meriden and Wallingford. At the age of 14, he showed a talent for art that an art teacher noticed. That same year he sold his first painting. Backstrom continued to paint and developed his skill in landscape painting. During the Second World War he served in the Army. On his return he studied art under Will H. Chandler in Washington, D.C. then, under John Conlon in New Haven. For two and a half years Backstrom attended the Hartford Art School and studied under Heindrik Mayer. In 1938, under the WPA project, he painted 13 easels. He was also skilled in painting murals and later in life painted many rooms in private houses in Meriden and Wallingford. Backstrom painted portraits of Babe Ruth and Marilyn Monroe. In the last years of his life his eyesight grew dimmer, but he continued to paint. Bckstrom died in 1983 in a nursing home in Wallingford.

Artwork measures approximately 15 5/8" wide and 11 1/2" high by sight and is in fine condition. Not inspected out of frame. 4 Paintings - John Backstrom and Others

Lot of four paintings, two signed by John W. Backstrom (American, 1899 - 1983), one unsigned landscape of the Meriden School (possibly Frederick Matzow), and one paintng signed "Newton". Backstrom was a noted painter from Meriden, CT, where he painted WPA murals as well as landscape paintings. Two small format oil on board landscape paintings by Backstrom, likely of Hubbard Park in Meriden. One is autumn, one is spring. Unsigned Meriden School landscape with birch trees, labeled on reverse of board "Conn. River Near Vermont". Painting signed "Newton" of a wooded area overlooking a pond. 8 7/8" wide by 6 3/4" tall to 10" wide by 13" tall (framed). Good condition, minor wear and tearing of paper on reverse of frames. John W. Backstrom, Large Oil on Plywood Panel

Signed large format oil on plywood panel painting by John W. Backstrom (1899 - 1983), a noted Meriden, Connecticut artist and WPA mural painter. The large painted panel shows a scene of a hunt, with folks dressed in traditional British fox hunting garb. The hunters sit on their horses while the beagles stand by. The landscape behind them is mountainous, as a river runs by. 27 1/2" tall by 65" wide, this is a monumental work. Likely from a house or public building. Signed in lower right corner, with partial date of 1935. Reportedly from a Meriden Area Hotel, possibly the Winthrop. Reverse of painting is partially painted a light green - blue color. Some nail / pin holes, some minor damage to surface. Unframed. Keywords: art, paint, decor, decoration, fancy
