Oil on canvas - signed lower right and on the verso titled "Back Country" in Backus's hand". Executed in full palette knife. “Back Country” is a stunning visual ode to the natural splendor of Adams Ranch in St. Lucie County, as envisioned by the masterful Albert E. Backus. This painting is a full palette knife rendering that brings to life a tropical oasis, where a cluster of palm trees stands majestically over a golden field of grasslands. The technique of palette knife painting lends a unique texture and vibrancy to the work, with each stroke of the knife capturing the essence of the Floridian landscape. The palm trees, with their fronds fanning out against the sky, are a testament to the enduring spirit of the tropics. Beneath the palms, the grasslands stretch out like a sea of gold, each blade of grass rendered with a richness that suggests the untamed beauty of the back country. The earthy tones of the field are a perfect complement to the lush greens of the palms, creating a harmonious contrast that is pleasing to the eye. Above, the sky is a canvas of tranquility, with puffy pink cumulus clouds drifting lazily across a backdrop of azure. The clouds catch the light of the sun, their edges tinged with the soft glow of pink.“Back Country” is more than a painting; it’s a journey into the heart of Florida’s wilderness. It’s an invitation to explore the untamed and the serene, to lose oneself in the beauty of nature’s palette. Canvas board measures 16x20 framed to overall size of 20x24. Includes a reproduced copy of the "An Evening With Beanie" program from 1979, with some snapshots that show the original painting in progress, and the artist with attendees Late Afternoon, Florida Backwoods was an original painting by Florida's preeminent landscape artist. It was a notable example of the artist's customary practice of donating his paintings for local charities and worthy causes. This original painting is documented as a special fundraising demonstration, painted live before an audience, at an event benefiting the Indian River Community College Foundation on Wednesday, April 18, 1979. Described in a printed program as "An Evening With Beanie," the painting was auctioned, with the high bidder being Juanita Geary, who was on the IRCC Foundation Board from 1979-1981. The painting was displayed in her home in Stuart until it was tragically destroyed in a 2003 fire. Before this tragedy, Mrs. Geary's daughter Linda, owner of the former Positive Images Photo Labs Inc. (1987-2002), captured a 4 x 5 inch transparency of the painting, the only professional quality image that now survives. Linda gave this to the Backus Museum in 2021, allowing the Museum to use the image once more to support its nonprofit mission. *Backus Museum Fundraiser Item*

Note: Albert Ernest “Beanie” Backus was a painter born in Fort Pierce, Florida in 1906. Though largely self-taught, he took summer classes at the Parsons School of Design in New York City from 1924 to 1925. Before selling his landscapes, he made money through commercial sign painting. His lifelong passions for plants and wildlife allowed him to render Florida seascapes with impeccable detail. Though Backus was not one of the famed Florida Highwaymen, they were influenced by his work. His skill in depicting the Florida landscape is on display in the lot offered here entitled “Windy Days.” The bend of the tree trunks and fluttering fronds come alive under the Florida sun as the viewer can almost smell the sea air and feel the warm breeze.
