Rachel Badeau Art for Sale and Sold Prices

As a self employed artist for the past 30 years I have etched and engraved in a variety of mediums. For almost twenty years I was a professional printmaker and my etchings were sold in galleries across the United States and Europe.

About 17 years ago , in need of a change, I developed a way to use my former scrimshaw experience to carve and engrave on a man-made material. Using techniques of sculpting, engraving, casting and hand coloring I created a line of jewelry, clocks, wall pieces and ornaments under the name Moosup Valley Designs. These works have also been sold across the United States and Europe.

"The Selkie" - According to legends of the far reaches of Ireland and Scotland, a Selkie is able to discard her seal skin and come ashore as a beautiful maiden. If a human can capture her seal skin, the selkie can be forced to become a fine, if wistful, wife. However, should she ever find her skin she immediately returns to the sea, leaving the husband to pine and die.
Rachel Badeau has been etching and engraving in a variety of media for over thirty years. Her work, characterized by fine line and intricate detail, attempts to touch the hearts and emotions of others, while reflecting her love of animals, nature and the human spirit.

Rachel's work progressed from scrimshaw jewelry to her 18 years of creating original hand colored, embossed etchings which have been sold in shops and galleries worldwide. She then created a unique line of resin jewelry and other items using the scrimshaw technique of engraving which has been sold worldwide for the past 16 years. Her current interest lies in making original scrimshaw engravings in fossilized ivory, Baltic Amber, mother of pearl and deer antler.

Rachel has studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the former Jess-Patterson studio in Providence. However, she is, for the most part, self-taught.

Artist Statement
My artistic obsession seems to be with fine detail expressing itself in a variety of media over the years. From scrimshaw, etching and engraving to drawing, carving and painting I have nurtured this fascination with miniature worlds. Nature and animals are my main inspiration, although I often find myself crossing that fine line into the world of fantasy. Art is a constant learning experience for me. The excitement lies in what is discovered with the creation of each new piece and the hope of bringing a little smile to the viewer
