        BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941)

        Est: €250 - €350

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant-General, the founder and first Chief Scout of the world-wide Scout Movement. An interesting, lengthy A.L.S., Robert Baden-Powell, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 1st April 1927, to Lieutenant-Colonel [Edwin] Smedley Williams, on the printed stationery of the Union-Castle Line R.M.M.V. Carnarvon Castle. Baden-Powell informs his correspondent that he has sent Mansergh a final appeal 'to reconsider his view against decentralisation in the distant ports of the Cape Province and against the making (of) a Central Coordinating executive for the Union', adding that Mansergh responded with a further definite refusal, and continuing 'I have pointed out in letters and conversations and, in what his executive committee termed ''homilies'', to them how essential such reorganisation is to progress and how it is asked for by the four other Provinces and by the three northern districts of the Cape Province. I explained that if the Scout spirit prevailed at Cape Hd. Qrs. they would as members of our team sink their own local prejudices or even interests for the good of the whole. All they did was to move a resolution not quite complimentary to me. I could not help thinking new Scouters would laugh if they saw it! At any rate I did - as I felt inclined to explain to them that our brotherhood is not a Parish Council and we don't move resolutions against people - least of all against ''poor bloody old me'' as General Tucker would say', further adding 'I am glad however to have seen for myself the entire absence of the Scout spirit at C P. H Q. and thus, if the Union Council ask Imperial Hd. Qrs. in England for powers to alter the Constitution so as to admit of decentralisation and coordinating executive we shall know how to act', concluding by remarking that he is pushed for time as the ship is departing and that he wishes for Strickland and Raftery at Kimberley to see his letter 'to show them how matters stand and that I am entirely in sympathy with your desire to go ahead and expand this movement to do big work for the country, under personal touch of leaders through a completed organisation of compact districts under Dist. Commissrs'. Some light foxing to the upper edges of the page and with a couple of paperclip rust stains to the upper left corner, otherwise about VG In September 1926 Baden-Powell had travelled to South Africa, where he was to remain for six months, in an effort to iron out the radical tensions in the fledgling scouting movement there, Originally, it was proposed that Indians be allowed to become Scouts, but in segregated troops. If this worked, then blacks and 'coloureds' would be formed into troops. However, this was unacceptable to Scouts in the Transvaal, where a separate movement for non-whites, called 'Pathfinders', had been instituted. For some, Scouting was to be a whites-only privilege. In 1927, Natal refused to start a 'Pathfinder' group and began to register Indians as Boy Scouts. Similarly, the provincial commissioner for Cape Colony, C. L. Mansergh, decided to ignore a separate organisation for 'coloureds' called 'Paladins' on the grounds that if he recognised them, the Boy Scouts would remain an all-white preserve. Clearly, Baden-Powell faced a difficult situation with each side lobbying for his support. The Chief Scouts efforts at compromise proved futile as, in 1931, the South African government created a youth movement for boys of Dutch descent - the Voortrekkers.

Baden-Powell Expands the Boy Scouts with: “Be Prepared,” first used in His 1908 handbook, “Scouting for Boys”

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

BADEN-POWELL, ROBERT. (1857-1941). English soldier and founder of the Boy Scouts; during the Second Boer War, Baden-Powell held Mafeking through a 217-day siege. ALS. (“Robert Baden Powell”). 2pp., 8vo. Pirie Dam, February 20, 1927. To Lieutenant Col. [Edwin] Smedley-Williams. “(Excuse my note paper!) On my way out here today I called in at Dale College, KW Town, and had a talk with the Principal, Mr. Sutton. He is favourable to having Scouts there if it were not that Cadets are compulsory. He would welcome the raising of the age for Cadets to admit scouting among junior boys. I have already written to Col. Croswell on this point and hope to see him next month about it. So ‘Be Prepared” to help them in starting Scouts ere long! Also I saw the boys of the Industrial School loafing about the roads badly wanting something to do. Just the class who most need Scouting—largely Dutch boys—a great opening for our work, if you can find a Scoutmaster for them. The two sons of my host, Mr. John Page of Kings W[illiam’s] T[own], would make valuable scouters or Commissrs. I expect. They are both young, married men, good sportsmen, educated at Dale, one was in the Indian Cavalry, the other in the Flying Corps in the war. Both command companies in the Kaffaria Rifles. Keep your eye on them! I find they admit boys to the Preparatory side of Dale College at 8 so they might very well start Wolf Cubs there as a thin end of the wedge, What about it? If you once got scouting going, and ultimately Rovering, in Dale Coll. it would mean a valuable help in Scouters for the movement in a few years time...” Baden-Powell fought with the British Army in India and Africa and his service record includes his heroic stand at Mafeking through a 217-day siege by the Boers in 1900. After returning to England, he discovered that the military training manuals he authored were widely read by young people. He responded to their interest in 1907 and organized the first Scouting encampment, which is considered the beginning of the Scout movement, and authored Scouting for Boys in 1908. Scouting’s popularity spread around the world during the first half of the 20th century with Baden-Powell leading the way. His books helped finance his world-wide traveling, and include Life’s Snags and How to Meet Them, written the year of our letter. In 1929, he became Baron Baden-Powell of Gilwell because of the scouting center he established at Gilwell Park in England. Our letter regards Boy Scouts at Dale College Boy’s High School in King William’s Town (modern Qonce), South Africa, one of the oldest schools in the country and mentions Wolf Cubs for the youngest scouts and Rover Scouts for adults. Our letter’s recipient was a Welsh colonel in the Kaffrarian Rifles during the Boer War and, later, founding headmaster of the Shelborne Primary School in East London, South Africa. Written on the recto and verso of a sheet of lined paper. With a paperclip stain in the upper left corner where Baden-Powell has added “personal” in pencil. Folded and creased, otherwise, in very good condition. Letters by Baden-Powell mentioning scouting are rare, especially those with the organization’s famous motto, “Be Prepared,” first used in Baden-Powell’s 1908 handbook, “Scouting for Boys.”

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General who, in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa, successfully defended the city in the Siege of Mafeking. Later Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. Autograph Manuscript signed, with his initials BP, three pages, 8vo, Waiho Gorge, Westland, New Zealand, n.d. (1934), in pencil, on the printed stationery of the Glacier Hotel at the Franz Josef Glacier. Baden-Powell's manuscript, with several corrections throughout, is entitled On a Glacier and states, in part, 'As I write this I am sitting on a bluff on the shoulder of one of the great mountains which rear their snowclad heads high above me on every side. In front and below me runs a wide valley which is filled from side to side with a vast white sheet of ice; not the sort of ice you know at home but a jumbled mess of blocks and waves and walls of ice. It is a glacier, or frozen stream, a mile wide and twelve miles long from where it starts…..I can see three tiny moving specks some two miles away on the glacier. These are my two daughters mountain climbing with their guide. Dressed in breeches and puttees and heavy iron-shod climbing boots and armed with ice axes for cutting steps in the ice and with goggles to escape the glare of the snow, they love the excitement of clambering over those great slippery crags…..As for me I am taking it easy, sitting on my bluff and gazing over this mighty frozen torrent. There is a steady rumbling hum in the air, just like the roar of the traffic in London as you hear it sitting in Hyde Park. This rumbling is the sound made by that vast mass of ice slowly, slowly grinding its way over the rocks and stones beneath it. Watching it and standing on it you can perceive no movement, but moving it is all the same…..It behaves just as a stream of water does in running down a steep water course, the difference being that it is all a solid block of ice….' The final page is lightly and neatly laid down to a page most likely removed from a scrapbook and the first two pages are neatly laid down to the left edges alongside. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG The present manuscript was most likely written in preparation for Baden-Powell's book Scouting Round the World (1935) which records the Chief Scout's round-the-world voyage undertaken in 1934 in the company of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, and their two daughters. The book features a description of his observations as his daughters climb the Franz Josef Glacier.

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General, founder of the Scout movement. An interesting T.L.S., Robert Baden Powell, four pages, 4to, Queenstown, South Africa, 25th February 1927, to Colonel Smedley Williams. Baden-Powell announces 'I was very pleased indeed to find the Scout Movement so much alive in East London. Well, I don't see how it could well be otherwise with you at the head…..and such a keen lot of Scouters and Lady Cub-masters' and continues his letter with seven headed paragraphs, in part, 'Rovers: I am glad that you have got the germs of Rovering started. It means such a lot to young fellows going out into life…I would like to congratulate you on the Scouty Lunch Club as a grand institution for bringing all together and fostering the Scout spirit. I should like to give the call to all ex-Scouts….to remember Lord Kitchener's saying “Once a Scout always a Scout”, and to roll up and rejoin our jolly Brotherhood either as Associates or Rovers and to give a hand as far as they can in pushing the Movement to the big development which lies before it. Scouts I would like to thank the Scouts for their splendid response to my request to do something at Christmas to the poorer children, including coloured and native youngsters, who through no fault of their own happen not to be white, but who can enjoy a day's happiness just as much as any of us. As a result of the Scouts' good turn these will have a greater feeling of good-will towards the whites…..Cubs I ought to have congratulated the Cubs….on the excellent and novel displays which they gave at the Rally. At the same time I should like to see more of them with Badges….and are doing their best….The Public The Public and Parents cannot fail to feel indebted to you and to those patriotic men and women who devote themselves to running the show for the good of their boys…..Schools I am glad that you personally have been one of the first of the educationists here to recognise the Educational value of Scouting…..The Future Now that I have nearly completed my tour of South Africa I am more than ever convinced of the power which Scouting possesses to help Education in developing the character and qualities needed in the men and women who will have the making of this country in their hands. So I urge you and your staff to continue your efforts, to consolidate your forces, and to make a bold forward move to develop Scouting on a yet wider footing, and so to impregnate a larger leaven of the youth with the right spirit and abilities. Personally I shall watch your onward progress with the greatest hope and closest interest…..Meantime to every Scouter, Rover, Scout and Cub I would commend this slogan, not merely as a precept but as one to say to yourself and to put into daily action in all that you do. “My country is a fine one, but I am going to do my bit towards making it yet a finer one”'. An unusually lengthy letter with fine content relating to the Scouting movement. With numerous light pencil marks throughout the text and some light creasing and minor overall age wear, some small pinholes to the upper left corner of each page, G
