Yerkes approaching the coast under full sail, flying a U.S. ensign off the foremast, a "D. & E." flag off the mainmast, a "William H. Yerkes" pennant off the mizzen, and an American and signal flags off the jigger. Well-detailed hull, deckhouses and lifeboat. Shoreline below the bow filled with cottages and the pair of Cape Henry Lighthouses. A white-hulled steam tug off her stern is flying a merchant flag at the bow and the American flag at the stern. Signed lower right "S.F.M. Badger Charlestown Mass.". Inscribed verso "S.F.M. Badger Charlestown Tremont St. Mass".

      Solon Francis Montecello Badger (American, 1873-1919) Oil on Canvas, signed l.l. "SFM Badger '93". The Jubilee was original built as a single master competitor for the America's Cup, by General Charles J. Paine, for the defense of the 2nd Dunraven Challenge, steel hull, lightest and most technologically advanced boat of its time. Charles Paine was actively involved in the America's Club and the New York Yacht Club. It was sold shortly after and the second mast was added. Listed as a two masted cutter in Lloyd's registry by 1910, and was acquired by Louis K. Thurlow, who was an avid sailor. Restoration work done December 1981 for Mrs. Fearn Thurlow, Curator of Newark Museum. Losses to frame, varnish discolored, some craquelure. Sight size: 21-1/2"h x 35-1/2"w Overall: 25"h x 39"w Provenance: Painted for Louis K. Thurlow, of the Crowland Thurlow Shipping Company, Boston, descended in the family.

Worden, Master, oil on canvas, signed lower right, with specifications of the schooner along bottom. His Charlestown address painted verso. She is depicted under full sail trying against a stormy sky and high waves, a second four mast schooner pacing her in the background. Housed in a magnificent gilt cove frame, OS: 28 1/2" x 42 1/2", SS: 21 1/2" x 35 1/2". Cleaned and relined. Note: Built by Carleton, Norwood & Co. of Rockport, Maine, launched in Nov 1904. Crew of nine. Lost to fire in 1919 at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

      Outstanding oil on canvas ship portrait shows the three-mast white hulled windjammer sailing under full sail right to left thru choppy seas under pink & grey clouds in a blue sky. Flags fly off the back mast and 12 crew members are seen on it's light colored wood deck. The name is emblazoned on both the bow and just back of the steering wheel. Signed lower left "SFM Badger". Also on verso of canvas "SFM Badger 5 Trenton St. Charlestown, MA USA .09". The Brynhilda was built by Stevens & Sons, Glasgow, 1885 and owned by J W Greencock. It held the record of 38 days, 6 hours from River Plate, Argentina to Australia in 1906. It was sold to D.I. Dewarand then to Harvard Shipping Co. and scrapped in 1924. This portrait descended in the family of Capt. James Adam Carr Green, 1844-1903. Information about the family and Capt. Green is included with this lot including copies of excerpts from a ship's journal in the early 1890's. Also included in this lot are two items from the Green family. One is a octant made of ebony & brass by G W Blunt of New York in a wood case. Also, a very interesting clear bottle half filled with ash purportedly when Capt. Green's boat was covered in volcanic ash from a nearby volcano (this is discussed in his letter to his wife in which he refers to his ship (the Brynhilda) being covered with ash). SIZE: 22" x 36". Overall: 29-1/2" x 43-1/2". CONDITION: Very good. Sextant shows use, bottle intact. 51344-23

      BADGER, Solon Francis Montecello (American, 1873-1919): Two Mast Schooner off the Coast, Oil/Artistboard, 12.25" x 18.5", signed lower right and dated 1888, also signed verso and dated, framed, 16.5" x 23". Badger was once known as Samuel; he was largely self-taught as a painter. Solon sometimes worked from blueprints of vessels and was known to sail the Boston Harbor to measure vessels for his paintings. His works can be found in several museums in New England.

In an American Red Walnut cove frame with black laquer and gold liner highlights. SS: 21" x 36". Cleaned, stretcher impression. The James Woolley was built in Boston in 1899, this was probably commissioned by the owner. She was still in use as of 1965.

This lot is accompanied by a chronometer and Liverpool jug used on the ship by the last captain. Chronometer: Waltham Watch Co. duel cased having original receipt dated 1925 having Captain Bradford of the Schooner Harriet "B". Liverpool Jug: 7" h jug with ship transfer, spread wing eagle "E Pluribus Unum" & Sailor's Embrace SIZE: 20" x 30". Overall: 24-1/2" x 34-1/2". Chronometer: Bezel 3" dia. Case is 5" sq.       Outstanding oil on canvas ship portrait shows the three-mast white hulled windjammer sailing under full sail right to left thru choppy seas under pink & grey clouds in a blue sky. Flags fly off the back mast and 12 crew members are seen on it's light colored wood deck. The name is emblazoned on both the bow and just back of the steering wheel. Signed lower left "SFM Badger". Also on verso of canvas "SFM Badger 5 Trenton St. Charlestown, MA USA .09". The Brynhilda was built by Stevens & Sons, Glasgow, 1885 and owned by J W Greencock. It held the record of 38 days, 6 hours from River Plate, Argentina to Australia in 1906. It was sold to D.I. Dewarand then to Harvard Shipping Co. and scrapped in 1924. This portrait descended in the family of Capt. James Adam Carr Green, 1844-1903. Information about the family and Capt. Green is included with this lot including copies of excerpts from a ship's journal in the early 1890's. Also included in this lot are two items from the Green family. One is a octant made of ebony & brass by G W Blunt of New York in a wood case. Also, a very interesting clear bottle half filled with ash purportedly when Capt. Green's boat was covered in volcanic ash from a nearby volcano. SIZE: 22" x 36". Overall: 29-1/2" x 43-1/2". CONDITION: Very good. Sextant shows use, bottle intact. 50440-5

      An oil on canvas depicting the three masted schooner "Bessie C. Beach" sailing right to left in a light chop ocean on a clear day. The Highland Light & Signal Station at Cape Cod in the background. The ship's name emblazoned on the bow, stern and on a pennant on the back mast. The ship is seen in full sail flying flags at the top of each mast and the American flag off back. Eight figures are seen on deck. Signed lower left "S.F.M Badger" and signed and inscribed on verso "S.F.M. Badger. 5 Trenton St. Charlestown Mass." The 128 foot ship was built in 1880 by H.H. Hanscomb in New Haven, Connecticut and weighed 283 tons. Mastered by E.G. McKeague, and owned by F.W. Benedict, her port of registry was New Haven. SIZE: 21" x 35". Overall: 26" x 39-1/2". Eight men and one woman on deck, off the bow is a lighthouse with connected buildings and other structures, all under a blue and white sky. Signed lower left "SFM Badger". The "Charles K. Schull" was built in Camden, NJ, in 1889 by Samuel W. Tilton. Operating from 1889 to 1905, registered in Philadelphia. At one time the master was Austin W. Clark, grandfather of the estate from which it came from. Housed in its original gilt and gesso decorated frame. SIZE: 22" h x 36" w. Overall 27" h x 41" w.
