BADRI NARAYAN (1929-2013) "UNTILTED" Watercolour on Paper Signed mid-right 28.5 x 19.5 inches Provenance: Property of a French Gentleman Footnotes: "I've had a natural inclination for storytelling since my childhood," states Badri Narayan, the self-taught artist born in July 1929 in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh. With over 45 years of artistic practice, he has navigated between roles as an art teacher and artist while maintaining a deeply introspective nature. This self-examination and autobiographical perspective serve as the enduring themes in Narayan's oeuvre. Narayan's paintings are inherently narrative, often bearing titles like 'Queen Khemsa's Dream of Hamsa' and 'Meeting at Midstream.' These titles provide the initial thread for unravelling the complexities within his works, urging viewers to interpret and comprehend them. Symbolism consistently features in his creations, occasionally intertwined with popular icons of Indian culture, such as Ganesha. He elucidates, "I have adopted the imagery that surrounds me, the one I was born into, and it flows naturally." Narayan draws profound inspiration from Indian mythology and metaphors, acknowledging the influence of the Indian miniature tradition in his artistry. He upholds the two-dimensionality of painting and favours a smaller format, ideal for the watercolours he has predominantly employed over the years. Narayan has also dabbled in etchings, woodcuts, ceramics, and illustrated various children's books. In 1954, Narayan held his inaugural solo exhibition of paintings at the Hyderabad Art Society, marking the onset of a prolific career. Since then, he has curated over fifty solo exhibitions, with several showcased at Pundole Art Gallery in Mumbai. His work has graced the galleries of Mon Art Gallerie in Kolkata, Sakshi Art Gallery in Bangalore, and Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. Narayan's art has made notable appearances in group exhibitions, including 'The Root of Everything' at Gallery Mementos, Bangalore, in 2009; 'Different Strokes' presented by Tulika Arts at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2007-08; 'Journey 2' at Gallery Art and Soul, Mumbai, in 2007; and 'Spectra' at Gallerie Zen, Bangalore, in 2007. He also participated in significant events like the Bharat Bhavan Biennale in Bhopal in 1992, the 7th Indian Triennale in New Delhi in 1991, and the International Triennales in New Delhi in 1968 and 1971, among others. Badri Narayan bid farewell on September 23, 2013, leaving behind a rich legacy of narrative and symbolism in Indian contemporary art.

India,1929-2013 Depicts an abstract portrait of a seated woman with a gray cat in her lap surrounded by figures and a table lined with plants, bowls, and a bird. Narayan is a self taught artist who worked as both an artist and an art teacher. His work draws from Indian mythology and metaphors with influences of traditional miniature paintings. Narayan's first solo exhibition took place in 1954 at the Hyderabad Art Society and has held many solo and group exhibitions since. This work will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
