Biography from the Archives of askART Biography photo for Jo Baer Minimalist artist Jo Baer was born Josephine Gail Kleinberg in Seattle, Washington in 1929. She studied at the University of Washington, Seattle from 1946 to 1949, majoring in biology, while taking freshman art courses. She pursued studies in Gestalt psychology in New York City with the graduate faculty of the New School for Social Research from 1950 to 1953. Initially an Abstract-Expressionist when that movement was at its height in the 1950s, Baer moved to geometric, hard-edged painting when that aesthetic surfaced in the 1960s, perhaps as a result of meeting minimalist artists Donald Judd and Dan Flavin in 1962. In the 1970s, her style changed back to an expressionist handling of animal and human forms. She moved to Ireland in 1975, London in 1982 and Amsterdam in 1984, collaborating with English artist Bruce Robbins from 1978 to 1984. Baer, in a 1983 article in "Art in America" essentially attacking abstraction, declared that she is "no longer an abstract artist." While she describes her goal of "radical figuration," Baer remains, in the 1990s into the new millennium, an abstractionist manifesting its various idioms, from nearly pictographic drawing in paint to working with broader, simpler shapes. In 1969, Baer received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. She taught briefly in 1969-70 in New York City at the School of Visual Arts. The artist has exhibited widely around the world, with one-person shows in many venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Noah Goldowsky and Fischbach galleries, in New York City; Galleria Toselli in Milan, Italy and Galerie Rolf Ricke in Cologne, Germany. Baer participated in group exhibitions such as Documenta 4 in Kassel, Germany, Kolnischer Kuntsverein, Cologne, Germany and the Guggenheim Museum, New York City. 24 1/4""H x 18 1/2"" (print), 28 1/4""H x 20 3/4""W

Jo Baer (b.1929) Cadmos' Thicket, 1974 inkless

        Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Jo Baer (b.1929) Cadmos' Thicket, 1974 inkless intaglio with handcolouring in oil published by Brooke Alexander Editions, New York, an artist's proof aside from the edition of 35 29 1/2 x 41 1/2 in., 75 x 105.4 cm Exhibited: Oxford, Museum of Modern Art, Jo Baer: paintings 1962-1974, 16 Oct - 20 Nov, 1977. New York, The Artist's Institute, Jan - July 2011 (another print). Considered as one of the pioneers of the New York school of Minimalism in the 1960s (along side Andre, Judd, Ryman, etc), Jo Baer's work is represented in worldwide institutions such as Tate, London and MOMA, New York. Noted for her application of 'borders' to the wide open spaces of the Minimalist painted canvas, accentuating the space within, Baer's work slowly moved into figuration during the 1970s, albeit with a signature lightness of touch. The present work combines the mechanical (almost industrial) process of compressing the paper in certain areas to create flattened shapes, juxtaposed with the delicacy of her painted borders and lettering. These letters seem lifted from a piece of classical text (hence the mythological title) but abstracted through their apparent non-relationship to the whole. This abstraction is futhered by the presentation in a vertical manner, rendering the lettering as abstract shapes hovering within the Minimalist space.
