        • "War Ships Heading Out" by Vernon Howe Bailey [136920]
          Aug. 08, 2021

"War Ships Heading Out" by Vernon Howe Bailey [136920]

          Est: $200 - $300

Pen and ink drawing by American artist Vernon Howe Bailey (1874-1953), 20 x 17.5 inches, of ten, state-named war ships in the Hudson River viewed from 122nd Street on Manhattan Island. The given location would suggest the ships are heading upstream toward Poughkeepsie, NY. The artist noted the names of each of the ships in the view. He further notes that this illustration is intended for a three-column image in a June 16 magazine, but he does not specify the year. By this time Bailey had been a regular contributor of drawings to Harper's Magazine, Collier's, and many other leading news publications of the day. On the reverse side of this drawing, there is a pencil sketch showing the war ships as viewed from the George Washington Bridge. From that perspective, the tall buildings on the opposite shore would be in Englewood, New Jersey. In 1917, Bailey was the first artist authorized by the US Navy to make drawings of Navy yards, gun shops, and munition plants.

Vernon Howe Bailey Drawing - Amsterdam Holland ca. 1905

          Est: $400 - $600

Vernon Howe Bailey (American, 1874-1953). "Amsterdam, Holland" drawing, ca. 1905. Signed on lower right. A striking drawing of a view of Amsterdam, replete with canals and historical edifices, at the turn of the 20th century. In addition to the charming facades, we see a man rowing a boat in the canal, two gentlemen docking a boat, and a couple before a horse-drawn carriage on the overpass. Amsterdam is home to three major canals - Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht - which were created during the 17th century Dutch Golden Age. Bailey adeptly brought the "Venice of the North" to life in this delightful drawing. Size: 16.5" L x 13.125" W (41.9 cm x 33.3 cm) Size of matte: 20.5" L x 16" W (52.1 cm x 40.6 cm) Vernon Howe Bailey studied art at the Pennsylvania Museum School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He began his career working as an artist for the Philadelphia Times and the Boston Herald. Next he spent several years in Europe living and working prior to being hired by the United States government to create wartime illustrations at Navy yards, ammunition factories, etc. In addition to his Navy illustrations, he was known for architectural drawings like this example.
