Jimmy Baker Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1915 - d. 2010

When asked when he first saw white man, Jimmy replied, "Hallelujah been comin'." Jimmy's family knew nothing of white man when they first encountered them. They thought they had seen monsters and the whole family took flight up a hill and hid in a cave. Actually, they had encountered a group of missionaries travelling via camel train from Ernabella to Warburton in Western Australia. Eventually, curiousity got the better of the family and they went to investigate. The children were given lollies to try but their parents told them not to eat them as they were poison. The children buried the lollies and ate them later. The same missionaries met up with the family on the return trip and introduced them to gospel singing around the campfire. Jimmy was the first willing participant and eventually was given a gift at the end of the night for being the best singer. The missionaries tried to convince the family to come back to the Ernabella mission but the family was not ready to give up their bush life.

When he was about 15, Jimmy's father, Tjuwintjara, met one of Professor TGH Strehlow's (Jimmy calls him Taylor, but we assume he means Strehlow) expeditions through Central Australia near Kanpi and Strehlow offered him tucker to help - "Flour, sugar, jelly bean, everything" according to Jimmy. After helping Strehlow, Strehlow gave the family a letter entitling them to access the stores at Ernabella. After some discussion, the family decided that ready access to food was an attractive alternative to the ups and downs of the seasons in bush life and moved into Ernabella.

Jimmy's first job at Ernabella was grinding flour and making bread and "big damper". Hence how he got his surname Baker. Later, Jimmy moved to Kenmore Park, a station near Ernabella where he was taught to fence. "Been doin a lotta fence. Too much. Miles!" Jimmy tells us. These fencing jobs took him from Kenmore Park all the way through Fregon and on to Mimili (Everard Park). At some stage when at Mimili, Jimmy met his wife and took her back to Kenmore Park to live. He subsequently fathered three children, Anton, Kay and Marita, all of whom are artists in their own right and were leaders in the movement to establish Tjunga Palya artists.

Jimmy did not commence painting until 2004, however, he was already attracting attention by the time the 2005 Desert Mob was held. In 2007, Jimmy was a feature artist in the National Indigenous Art Triennial `07: Culture Warriors Triennial exhibition at the National Gallery in Canberra.

Jimmy was a custodian of the important Kalaya Tjukurpa (Emu Dreaming) as well as a number of other dreamings. Interestingly, in talking to Jimmy, he made no distinction between himself and the emu in the story. The man and the dreaming are one. "Me, I'm the emu. Me. I ate that turkey. Me. I did. See here (pointing to his breast bone where he bears a scar the size of a 20 cents piece). See him there, that's where I ate him."

Jimmy spent his finals years between Kanpi, Watarru and Alice Springs and passed away in 2010.

JIMMY BAKER (1915-2010) (Language Group: Pitjantjatjara) Piltati Tjukurpa 2005 synthetic polymer paint on linen inscribed verso with artist's name and Maruku Arts cat. no.1840 90 x 60cm PROVENANCE: Maruku Arts, Northern Territory (accompanied by a copy of the certificate of authenticity) Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: "Paintings depict the Tjukurpa, the Law and stories of Ancestors. Anangu (Central and Western Desert Aboriginal people) have responsibilities for the protection and teaching of different Tjukurpa and there are strict protocols for the imparting of knowledge. The dotting technique has evolved with the need to adapt sacred expressions of Tjukurpa for the public viewing and as a depiction of the desert landscape. The Piltati Tjkurpa belongs to the ranges in far northern South Australia. It tells of two women, who set out hunting and gradually draw further and further away from home. They dig burrow after burrow hoping to find small game. Their husbands follow them and transform into Wanampi, water snakes, to lie in wait for their wives. 'Wati nyanga pula kutjara Wanampi nyinara, wangkara, wangkara, wananingi minyma kutjara tjwara tjwara tjarpantja.' (These two men, the Water Serpents, were sitting and talking about following the two women and how they had been digging and digging before they reentered the earth). Mr Baker says the top part of the painting shows the numerous burrows dug by the women and in the very corner is Piti Atatjara, the place their husbands caught up with them. The brown line is the path the serpents took as they carried their women off to Piltati where they remained. The section below shows the Wanampi coming out of his burrow to catch a kangaroo and the numerous burrows and tracks where they lived and hunted." They eat too much, so I killed them all!'. The emu hadn't really killed his children but hidden them in the bush. When the turkey's son heard this he said to his father 'If you don't kill me I'll show you where all the tucker is'. But the turkey was thinking I might kill my son. He killed him, hit him on the head. While the turkey was sitting down at Kanpi he saw the emu come back with all his children. He realised he'd been tricked and was angry. He decided to kill that man. He told the emu to grab his spear thrower and come with him. He hit him in the chest and finished him. When he got back to Kanpi rockhole all the emu kids were painted up for Inma (sacred dancing). The kipara hid behind a tree and whistled at them. He was frightening them and they thought he was mamu (devil spirit). They ran off down towards Watarru. This is the true story for Kanpi." As stated in the Tjungu Palya certificate of authenticity

Baker began painting in 2004 and although he produced a relatively small body of work, his cultural status as a traditional healer (ngangkari) and senior law man gives his paintings an air of authority and integrity. First exhibited in 2005 at the Desert Mob exhibition held annually in Alice Springs, his paintings were subsequently included at the exhibition every year until 2009.  Katatjita, 2006 was one of three paintings by Jimmy Baker featured in the inaugural Australian Indigenous Art Triennial, Culture Warriors held at the National Gallery of Australia in 2007. The painting recalls an episode from the Kanpi Tjukurpa (Dreaming story of Kanpi) that takes place at Katatjita, a rock hole with a large underground cave to the west of Nyapari. The story tells of a woman named Malilu from the Tjukurpa (Creation time) who is taking refuge in the cave. Having refused the advances of a man who wanted to sleep with her, Malilu was speared many times by the man before she escaped to the safety of the cave. Baker's work has been exhibited widely to much acclaim and his paintings are held in the collections of most State public galleries, together with significant international collections. The tightly placed dots creating fields of colour alongside clearly defined lines and roundels are typical motifs within Baker's repertoire. His paintings hold physical, geographical, spiritual and ceremonial overtones with each work a multi-layered journey into the land that he paints, sharing stories, significant sites or paths etched in the landscape by ancestral beings.  Jimmy Baker is survived by his three children, Anton, Kay and Marita, all of whom are artists in their own right and paint for Tjungu Palya.  © Jimmy Baker/Copyright Agency 2022

        Oct. 20, 2020

        Jimmy Baker - Kanpi, 2005

        Est: $3,500 - $4,500

Jimmy Baker was born in the Western Desert at a rockhole called Malumpa, a location close to the present-day community of Kanpi in north-west South Australia. He was one of the most senior and highly respected men in the APY Lands. Baker was a great storyteller and a highly respected ngangkari (healer). An exceptional craftsman, able to create traditional implements of the highest standard, he began painting in 2004 and produced a relatively small body of work. Like other senior men, Baker painted stories in a way that clearly defined significant sites or paths etched in the landscape by ancestral beings. These sites are multi-layered, with physical, geographical, spiritual, and ceremonial connotations. Jimmy Baker’s work encapsulates the essence of culture, country and Indigenous pride. He had a rare artistic gift and was one of the most important artists from the Central and Western Desert region.

        Jimmy Baker (1915-2010) Kanpi

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

        Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Jimmy Baker was a senior Pitjantjatjara man who lived at Kanpi an outstation on the APY lands in the north of South Australia. He was renowned as a Ngankari or traditional healer and highly skilled carver of men's traditional implements before becoming a painter. This work is about the Emus ancestors of his country at Kanpi. The Emu was Jimmy's totem animal. They travelled a long way to get to this site where they drank their fill before moving on. Here they ate mistletoe berries and other berries, caterpillars, and native cress. In this painting Jimmy shows the camps of the Emu and the waterholes they visited along with their travelling tracks. Kanpi is also an important site of the Piltati Dreaming which relates the story of two couples who turn into Water Serpents.

"Nyangatja ngayuku ngura Kanpinya. Wati ngaringu Kanpila tjiraratjura." This is my country kanpi. A man lay down there with his legs outstretched. - Jimmy Baker Jimmy's Tjukurpa related to Kanpi is to do with the Kalaya or Emu People as well as Wanampi or Water Serpent. Jimmy paints their camp sites and travelling tracks and talks about the food they drink, but doesn't elaborate on their Creation Law. Coded in Jimmy's Creation or Law stories is the information needed to hunt and survive and his paintings are a celebration of the stretch of his culture.
