          Mar. 02, 2023

          Virginia Banks (Washington, 1920-1985) Oil/Board

          Est: $800 - $1,400

Virginia Banks signed original oil painting on masonite [The Fox and the Grapes]. Measures 9.25 x 23.625 inches. Unframed original label. Excellent condition. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. These treasures were truly found "in the wild," and that's how David liked it. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Est: $4,000 - $6,000

American abstract oil painting by Virginia Banks from the 1940s. This work was created during the late 1940s when the artist created a series of paintings for a show in New York City at Grand Central Moderns. Banks made and painted all the frames for all of her paintings during this period, and this work is housed in it's original frame. Titled: 'Floating Tiger' Date: 1940s Medium: Oil on artist's board. Measurements: 8.5 inches by 19.5 inches sight size, and 15.75 inches by 26.75 inches by 2.25 inches overall including framing. Notes: This work is housed in the original artist made custom frame. Provenance: From the estate of the artist. About the artist: Virginia Banks (1900-1985) was an American modernist artist associated with the Pacific Northwest. Banks was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1920. She received a BFA from Smith College in 1941, and an MFA from the University of Iowa. In the 1950s Banks married, and moved with her husband to Seattle, WA. Although Banks called Seattle her home for the remainder of her life, and was active in the Northwest art scene, she never assimilated into the Northwest School of Art that’s characteristics include Northwest Native culture, Asian aesthetics, and diffused lighting. Virginia instead tended to lean on her influences from her training as a young artist. Later in her career Banks ventured into abstract expression, and then realism, a trend common with 20th century American artists. Her early abstracts works of the 1940s and 50s are the most sought after and consequently command the highest price at galleries and auctions.
