Camille Corot, Jean- Baptiste (French, 1796-1875) Oil on Canvas - UNSIGNED. A portrait in a dim, shadowy space, of a nude young lady with long brunette hair draped down her back, as she ponders with a sea shell clasped in her hand. This painting was separated from the original canvas and applied onto a new stretched canvas in an effort to remove natural crazing that appears with age. Canvas measures 32x39.5 framed to overall size of 40.5x48.5. Ex: NY Elizabeth Auctions 2024 The Barbizon school of painters were part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The Barbizon school was active roughly from 1830-1870. It takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France, near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Some of the most prominent features of this school are its tonal qualities, color, loose brushwork, and softness of form. In the spring of 1829, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot came to Barbizon to paint in the Forest of Fontainebleau, he had first painted in the forest at Chailly in 1822. He returned to Barbizon in the autumn of 1830 and in the summer of 1831, where he made drawings and oil studies, from which he made a painting intended for the Salon of 1830; "View of the Forest of Fontainebleau'" (now in the National Gallery in Washington) and, for the salon of 1831, another "View of the Forest of Fontainebleau"'. While there he met the members of the Barbizon school; Theodore Rousseau, Paul Huet, Constant Troyon, Jean-François Millet, and the young Charles-François Daubigny. During the late 1860s, the Barbizon painters attracted the attention of a younger generation of French artists studying in Paris. Several of those artists visited Fontainebleau Forest to paint the landscape, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille. In the 1870s those artists, among others, developed the art movement called Impressionism and practiced "Plein Air Painting." Condition: Very Fine

Jean Baptiste Robie, Belgian, 1821 to 1910, an oil on panel painting depicting a classic Still Life with Roses, Grapes and Plums. Signed by the artist lower right. Housed in an elaborately carved gilt wood and gesso frame. Provenance: Shapiro Auctions New York, IMPORTANT FINE ART, 10.15.2022, lot 231. Note: Jean Baptiste Robie was known for his floral still lives of all types but he was master of the rose. He also painted landscapes but his specialty and recognition came from the floral studies. He debuted at the Salon de Brussels in 1843, exhibiting there in 1848, 1854, 1857, 1860, 1863, 1867 and 1875. He was awarded the Knight of the Order of Leopold in 1861, the Knight of the Legion d Honneur an officer of the Order of Leopold in 1869 and then a commander of the Order of Leopold in 1881. Robie lived much of the time in London between 1848 and 1875 and established his reputation in the International market while there by exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Although, he traveled extensively to Italy, Spain, England, Germany, France, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and India. His paintings are included in the collection of museums in Brussels, Ghent, Boston, Brooklyn, Hamburg, Lille, Minneapolis, Sydney and Florence. One of a kind artwork. L'uso del pastello come mezzo era diventato di moda a Parigi dopo la visita dell'artista veneziana Rosalba Carriera nel 1719-1720. Nato a Parigi, si presume che la sua formazione avvenne nelle botteghe di Charles-Joseph Natoire e di Laurent Cars, noto incisore. Infatti, Perronneau ha iniziato la sua carriera come incisore prima di dedicarsi alla ritrattistica, sia a olio che a pastello. Divenne membro dell'Accademia nel 1753 e lo sappiamo in Italia nel 1759, in Russia nel 1781 ed infine ad Amsterdam, dove morì. L'opera è corredata da schede critiche di Ferdinando Arisi e Raffaella Colace.
