Mariano Barbasan Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1864 - d. 1924

Mariano Barbasán Lagueruela (3 February 1864 – 22 July 1924) was a Spanish painter of genre scenes and cityscapes in the Realist style; later influenced by Impressionism.

He was born in Zaragoza. From 1880 to 1887, he attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia). Upon graduating, he moved to Madrid and became a historical painter; specializing in scenes from the history of Toledo, which he visited frequently.[1] He also did some scenes from literature and presented his rendering of the Walpurgisnacht of Faust at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts.

In 1889, thanks to his painting "Joseph Interpreting the Cup-bearer's Dream", he received a stipend from the "Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza [es]" to continue his studies at the es:Academia de España en Roma (Spanish Academy in Rome). While there, he painted mostly landscapes and scenes of rural life.[1]

He eventually decided to live there and opened a studio; making occasional trips to Subiaco and Anticoli Corrado to paint en plein aire. He held frequent exhibits throughout Germany, Austria and England, but not in Spain, as a result of which he was little-known in his home country. In 1912, he lived in Montevideo for a short time while overseeing two exhibitions there.[2]

He stayed in Rome until 1921, when his health began to worsen. Returning to Spain, he took a chair at the "Academia de Bellas Artes de San Luis" in Zaragoza, which had recently become vacant due to the death of Francisco Pradilla. It was two years later that he held his first retrospective exhibition, at the Central Market in Zaragoza.[2] He died in Zaragoza, aged 60.

In 1925, his son organized a new, more formal exhibition that helped establish his reputation in Spain.

MARIANO BARBASÁN LAGUERUELA (Zaragoza, 1864 - 1924). "Washerwomen at the river". Oil on canvas. Signed and located in Rome in the lower left corner. Slight faults in the frame and on the back of the painting. label of Ramoneda and Barrachina. Measurements: 80 x 116 cm; 99 x 134 cm (frame). Panoramic landscape of great beauty, presided by a river that widens forming a pond. Around the washing gesture of one of the women, waves are drawn in the water. The reflective surface of the pond absorbs all the shades of autumn in shimmering mottled shades. The river flows through a wooded terrain that undulates in soft valleys. The brushstroke unfolds in a variety of touches (swift, juicy, tight or long) depending on whether the treetops, the green of the meadow or the watery glazes are depicted... Barbasán reflects with his characteristic genius the different speeds that water acquires, from its foamy crests to its mirror-like transparencies. Mariano Barbasán began his training at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he entered in 1880. During his time as a student, he maintained a close relationship with his fellow students Joaquín Sorolla and Salvador Abril. In 1887 he moved to Madrid to see the collections of the Prado Museum, and that same year he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. During this period he travelled regularly to Toledo, studying its landscapes and architecture. In 1889 he obtained a pension from the Diputación de Zaragoza to complete his studies in Rome. He finally decided to stay in Italy permanently. He opened a studio in Rome, but for long periods he worked in Subiaco, in the Roman countryside. At the age of fifty-seven he returned to Spain to take up a post at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Luis in Saragossa. Thanks to his contacts with English and German dealers, his work spread rapidly throughout Europe. He exhibited repeatedly in Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Montevideo. An anthological exhibition was held in his native city in 1923 at the Centro Mercantil, and another posthumous one was held at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid in 1925. Although he initially painted some works of a historical nature, Barbasán chiefly cultivated landscape painting and scenes of rural life, as in the present work. In this canvas we can appreciate his personal abbreviated brushstroke and his masterly sensitivity in capturing the light and atmosphere of his surroundings. His style, colourful and luminous, is above all realistic, with a certain influence of Impressionism (mainly Italian Pre-Impressionism) and the work of Fortuny. Works by Mariano Barbasán can be found in the Prado Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Provincial Museum of Zaragoza, the Museum of Modern Art in Rome, and the Fine Arts Museums of St. Petersburg, Munich, Warsaw, Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro, among others.

MARIANO BARBASÁN LAGUERUELA (Zaragoza, 1864 - 1924). La cuentacuentos" ("The Storyteller"), 1898, Rome. Oil on panel. Signed, dated and located in the upper right-hand corner. Measurements: 20 x 32 cm; 44 x 57 cm (frame). Costumbrist scene full of anecdotes, in which a group of children listen amazed to the story that an old man explains to them. Each of the characters has been tenderly characterised. Each gesture conveys something of their personality, so that spontaneity and naturalism emanate from the group. The luminist scene has been resolved with Barbasán's characteristic short, undone brushstrokes. Mariano Barbasán began his training at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he entered in 1880. MARIANO BARBASÁN LAGUERUELA (Zaragoza, 1864 - 1924). "A Rainy Day in Anticoli". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 17,5 x 35,5 cm; 45 x 63 cm (frame). The present canvas was painted by Mariano Barbasán during his stay in Rome, where he opened his own painting studio and took up residence until he was 57 years old, making trips to Anticoli Corrado and Subiaco to work from life. In it, Barbasán offers us an imposing natural image, skilfully constituted with a synthetic and rigorous drawing, on which he deploys a very broad and nuanced palette, which reflects with naturalism and instantaneity a fleeting moment but at the same time impregnated with a timeless character, bathed in a nuanced light that announces the sunset after a long day of rain. The protagonist, a young peasant girl heading towards the front with her cattle, leaves behind a hacienda where a group of characters unfolds and masterfully closes the composition. Mariano Barbasán began his training at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he entered in 1880. During his time as a student, he maintained a close relationship with his fellow students Joaquín Sorolla and Salvador Abril.
