With a “Winsor & Newton/London” stamp to canvas verso. Housed in antique frame. Accompanied by a note (possibly written by artist) reading, “Resting – J.M. Barker / To [?] Pylee / With J.M. Barker Compliments / Jan 5th 1870” and reading underneath in a different hand: “Purchased in an antique shop / Oxford, England / Oct. 1937″. Frame: h. 23 1/4″, w. 20 3/4”. Joseph Moseley Barber is a British painter who worked in Birmingham, Leicester, Chelsea and Brixton. He exhibited two genre paintings entitled Falsehood and Mother’s Admonition at the ROI, as well as several landscapes at the Royal Academy from 1864 to 1878 and further works including 13 at the Royal Society Of British Artists and at The Royal Hibernian Academy up to around 1889. He mostly painted genre scenes but also painted coastal scenes such as in 1874 when he exhibited ‘At Hastings’ at The Royal Academy London. It is recorded that the watercolourist David Cox and John Pye studied under him in Birmingham.
