        Angiolo Barbetti (Italy, 1805-1873), Pair of Carved and Painted Figural Stands mid 19th century, carved and painted wood, one part form, full bodied figures standing atop shells and dolphins, triangular plinths marked "Barbetti Firenze". 60 x 18 x 18 in., shelf surface 9.5 in. diameter Barbetti's first significant commission was in 1831, for the Church of Tartuca, Siena, and he would go on to carve and design furnishings for wealthy clients and public displays until his death in 1873. At the 1851 Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace Barbetti's display included what the Official Catalogue describes as a "Grand set of ornamental furniture, in walnut, for a drawing room, consisting of a console and frame [...] a work of exquisite carving, the architecture in the style of Baldassare Peruzzi". The suite was awarded a prize medal and the piece described above was eventually purchased by the South Kensington Museum for the sum of £400 and today remains in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. His pieces are rare to come up at auction, and even rarer to be signed. From the Estate of David R.         Italy, circa 1850, possibly the workshop of Angiolo Barbetti (Sienna 1805 - Florence 1873) walnut, part gilded, the mirrored glass Louis XIII Circular mirror with nine convex polished circles. In a carved frame with floral- and 'tongue and dart' motif, surmounted by a crest with an eagle standing upon a fish. The underside with a coat of arms. H. 62 x W. 43 cm N.B.: This mirror exhibits great similarities to the work of Angiolo Barbetti, a prominent sculptor, designer and decorator who had a succesfull studio in Florence. A large variety of carved ivory, ebony and walnut furniture, ranging from frames to inlaid tables and cabinets were made here. Barbetti represented Tuscany at the London International Exhibition of 1851.
